I reciently replaced the clutch on my 74 w/M21. Since then the clutch pedal has a rattle in it when in neutral. If I press down slightly, the rattle goes away. Is this a simple adj or something bigger. The clutch seems to have the right ammount of free play. Any ideas? TIA
Sounds as though your pilot bushing in your crank is wore out. This will cause the input shaft of the transmission to wobble in neutral making the noise you hear. When you press in clutch the input shaft stops rotating and the noise goes away. Was this exact same thing 4yrs ago on my Blue '68 convertible. Tranny, bellhousing, clutchplate & disc need to be removed. Flywheel can remain on to get at the PILOT BUSHING. Not 100% sure if this is your problem as you describe it, but it's PROBABLY what it is.
I didn't do any of the work. It does sound like the rattle/vibration is in the linkage, not the disk & PP. How do I check the z bar and spprings?
Thanks much,
Rick
There's two springs that attach to the pushrod that goes from the Z-bar to the clutch fork. They attach to the center of this pushrod and one goes to the z-bar, the other the fork. Oh, there is also one other spring that goes from the z-bar to the fire wall on the frame side. This is actually a return spring to help raise the pedal when your not pressing it, probably to reduce wear on the clutch.
The 2 little springs (not the return spring) are called, "anti-rattle springs" so naturally one would suspect their absence as a cause for rattling. Good idea to check for them first! May or may not be the actual problem.

Check the operating rods for elongated holes.
Thought i had a worn clutch once only to find the linkage was bad. After 25 yrs the clutch operating rod holes had became slots. The clutch would kinda slip into engagement.
Replaced both rods and Z-bar for <$100. Could'a repaired old pieces but plenty of new replacements availible from the vendors and not much $$.
Happy hunting. cardo0
