Having performed all the recommended diagnostic tests in the '74 Service Manual, I removed my starter and tried to get it to spin. The manual is vauge on this procedure.
I hooked up jumper cables from the battery to the starter (positive to battery terminal, negative to starter body) then jumped the battery post to the "S" post. Nothing but sparks.
It is probably only the solenoid. If the windings were fried, you'd know it because what you described would creat a dead short if they were and it would have a smell of burned bacon. You can change just the solenoid if you don't want to spend the money on a starter.

Well...the starter looks old...after going through the removal process, I'm probably going to stick one of those mini-starters back in.
