Default Anyone running a 3.36 diff. with a stock auto?

I'm just wondering how the highway drivability is. I swapped my junk 2.73 for a 3.36 but I won't be able to test drive it until spring (a loooong time from now in these parts ).
I also plan on swapping my old engine for one of these soon:

Ya, I'm going broke fast and my TH400 seems to shift fine so I'm hoping an overdrive won't be necessary but if you guys all tell me I should have one I guess now would be the time to do it.

Yep, about 2550 at 60 mph with 15" 255/60's, doesn't seem to be too hard on gas, maybe 18mpg.

My 72 with a turbo 400 and 3.36's shows about 3000 rpm's at legal cruising speeds ( around 70 mph) Gas mileage is around 13.5 mpg. The engine is mildly built, with headers and a k&n air filter. Tom

We've all been fooled by modern fuel injected overdriven cars into believing that cars have to run under 2000 rpm on the highway. The truth is the motors in these cars don't have any problem running 3000 rpm for hours at a time. And with a carburator they run a lot better at that rpm too. So enjoy the throttle response you get with your new 3.36 gears and don't get "parts envy" from reading about other people's cars.
Joe
Besides, you'd have to drive 50-100,000 miles to pay off an OD tranny on gas milage savings anyway.

My everyday driver is a stock 76 with a 4 speed stick and a 3.36 posi.
It isn't fast but it is fun and easy to drive.
A pleasant combination for easy driving.
You could stop over and drive it -- just as soon as I get rid of the Wisconsin snow drift in front of the shop door.

Looking at the avatar, I see you have sidepipes.
That may play into your decision ... since it can get loud cruising at 3k+.

2.73s, huh ? Was that a stock '75 unit ? You don't see too many of
these. I have the standard 3.08s that came with 75 and TH400.
I'd like to step up a notch or two to 3.36s or 3.70s.
It should make the driving a bit more fun.

That engine is pretty close to what you have now ... except for the
smaller chamber vortec heads. For a few hundred, you could put the
heads on yours ... and a cam/intake to really top it off. Of course, if
yours is in serious need of a rebuild, maybe it would be a wash.

Sounds like I should be OK. I really don't understand why they ever put 2.73s in a Corvette. Must have had something to do with the gas crunch and EPA regs or something. Anyway I can't wait to try the 3.36s out.
Yes I have sidepipes and they are fairly loud which will only get worse but I can live with that.
Like Joe says I guess we're all so used to overdrives it maybe just seems like an engine can't handle cruising at 3000 RPM anymore. The gas mileage doesn't look bad either .
My stock numbers matching engine is burning a quart about every 300 miles. I'm not sure why. It doesn't seem to smoke that bad and the compression checked out at around 130-140 psi but that was with the engine cold.
After a decent rebuild and vortec heads it sounds like it would be cheaper to just go with the new engine and thrash it around.
Thanks. John

My '71 has the 3.36:1 gears behind the T400. Like mentioned above..I tach around 3100 @70MPH with 225/70/15 tires.
