Default Door Problem

Could someone give me a definative answer
I have the same problem a lot of you guys have in that on occasion my door will not latch when closed or will not unlock when locked. I seem to always get it open by the flicking of the inside handle method and I have been told the problem is a "worn out spring".
And now for the ?
where is this mystery spring in the latch or handle mechanism, How do I fix this problem?? If I go to remote locks will it solve the problem or make it worse??

It is difficult to diagnose from the outside. You need to go inside. It is not as scarey as it sounds. Remove the door panel. Be careful with removing the inner door handle from the latch as the latch is made from 70s Diecast and it is brittle. Once the door panel is off look at your linkages. They are probably the cause of your problem. They are all adjustable. You unclip one end and wind it longer then clip it back on. All the corvette suppliers sell rebuild kits for the linkages. To be honest you would be better off with some nuts the same thread as the linkage ends and some locktite. Us the nuts as Jam-nuts to keep the linkage ends from moving around. Use some BLUE locktite to glue everything together AFTER the linkages are the correct length. while you have the panel off pull out your latch mechanism and clean it then lube it with a small amount of grease.

There is 30 years worth of pushing and pulling on those linkages. You will be amazed at how well everything works once it is set up again at the correct lengths. No secrets just get in the door look at each linkage and adjust the length until it does what it is supposed too. Before I adjusted mine the door handle would hinge almost all the way down before it would start to engage and I would have to yank on the door to open. Now I can press about 20% down with two fingers and it pops open like a new car.

Now go fix it!

Cheers,

Pete

Be sure to use white lithium grease.
