Actually quite easy. You can slide the trans back far enough to get a wrench in there to loosen the bolts and remove the flex plate. I should not say easy but the trans does not have to come all the way out.
Almost impossible, automatics have flexplates, what are you trying to do ?
Yeah that too! lol The reason I asked is because yesterday I noticed a squeaking/tapping sound coming from underneath the car. I looked underneath and noticed that 2 bolts were missing from my bell housing on the driverside. I took it to a tranny shop to get some bolts put in. While the guy was installing them he showed me that my flexplate had a few cracks in it, I'm assuming from the vibration of the bellhousing being loose. Anyway I need to replace it. I have a 1980 automatic. What flexplate do I need? # of teeth? Would it be worthwhile to get an SFI flexplate? Internal/external balanced?

just get one to match the one you have....measure the diameter/number of teeth....i think they come balanced...they are not heavy like fly wheels and you will be surprised at how skimpy they are...this will not be an easy task...not technically difficult but a lot of grunt work to seperate everything..and replace it.....
and yes the one on ebay is what you want if the diameter/teeth are correct....i would go to jegs or summit...but that is the idea and price range

Chevy only had (they say 2) 3 different sizes of flywheels for smallblocks. Easiest thing is take the old one out and then run to azone or oriellys etc and tell them your app, they'll pull one out of a box. Lay them on top of each other to see the size. SBCs had "the big one" a "small one" and yet a third one for those TH350C transmissions with lock up torque converters. The lock up TCs had different mounting hole locations or something.
Getting to the flexplate isn't too bad at all, i've done it several times. Start by removing the inspection cover (hope you exhaust isn't in the way), remove the 3 bolts that hold the torque converter to the flexplate. You'll have to trun the flexplate to get to all the bolts. you can use a prybar, screwdriver, or flywheel wrench. Then put a jack with a piece of plywood cut to the approx. size of the pan on it and jack it up to the transmission pan until it is tight and holding the weight of the tranny, but not lifting it. Then remove the 6 bolts holding the tranny to the block and the 2 bolts that hold the tranny to the crossmember. Slide the tranny back, you should have enought play with the yoke that you will not have to disconnect the driveshaft. Remove the bolts holding the flexplate to the crank.

How hard is it to slide the tranny back and forth? I guess I'll have to position the jack so it can roll backwards with the tranny correct?
It'll take a good shove, make sure the car is set on good jackstands. You can pry against the back of the block once you make a space. Just don't force it, it'll go. Joe

i would think you would need to take out the drive shaft and take the bolts out of transmission mount in order to move it enough....never have done it this way so not sure how much you have to move the transmission....

I recommend that you support the engine. You also need the car off the ground with enough clearance to to use a breaker bar to remove the flexplate bolts and to torque them.
HELP!!! I'm stuck! How do I keep the flexplate from turning when I'm trying to loosen the bolts holding it on??
There's a special tool for that, but I usually use a screwdriver through one of the big holes and under the block where the starter goes. A piece of wood works too. Joe
Finally finished! Only tooke me 5 1/2 hours. lol The hardest part was getting to the top 2 transmission housing bolts. Anyway, I took it for a test drive and the transmission didnt fall out of the car, so thats good!
Thanks for all the help guys!
