When my engine was rebuilt the shop screwed some plugs into the block where a temp sending unit goes. The round threaded plugs have a square indentation to insert and remove. Socket extensions don't fit. It is smaller than a 3/8th but larger than a 1/4. Does anyone know what the name of the tool is to remove these plugs? And where to purchase it.
Pipe plug socket, available in male and female sockets. Never use a normal square drive extension even when it's the right size (like the top oil gallery plug on the back valley rail). They will break where the retaining ball is.

your least espensive option is to buy a hex head socket (allen wrench head or a torqx head) and grind it down into 4 corners.....the tool you are looking for is NPT ...national pipe thread male and female socket set...the ones i bought from SK are 10 socket male and female it cost $75...any major SK tool center has them...locally you can buy them from Eppys tool and equipment warehouse Howell NJ....732-942-3700

that socket cable tied to the socket is the one i made...

I made mine out of a piece of 3/8 square lathe tool bit stock about 1 inch long and hand ground down one end of the square until it fit nicely into the plug. Now the tool itself is plenty strong because it is tool steel.
I drive it with a 3/8 square drive socket.
I got my tool from my local Cornwell tool guy. It wouldn't budge that plug-but it had been installed for about 40k miles. I had to drill it out and use a remover tool. Good luck with yours.

i used the oxy/act torch and wax trick.....with my custom ground square socket head since my plug had been internally rounded...

Sounds kinky. Could you elaborate?
Thanks
not an original idea my me but i used it after reading about here....heat the plug with a torch and then hit the plug with wax (from a candle out of the china cabinet)...the wax turns into essentially water and gets sucked into the threads by a capillary action. Did this three times with a light hammer tap also.... and ...badda bing badda boom its out...with really light turning pressure...
