Default 1977 Paint progress (pics)

Well for anyone who care, we are halfway done with the stripping of the car for paint. This is the first time I have ever been involved with paint and body work. A friend of mine is doing the paint job but I get to help, so this is exciting to me. At this point, we have most of the paint stripped off, the windshield and rear window out, seats, dash etc out, side pipes off, and emblems and lights off.

We are using a paint stripper for fiberglass to remove the paint. It is working very well so far. The car was originally orange, then was repainted black(very badly). We had to get the black off because there was many flaws in the paint including alot of dust. In taking the black off, the orange was comming off also. So we decided to take all paint off.

When this is done, we will go over the body with something( not sure what it is yet but she does) to fill in all the scratches and imperfections. Then goes the primer and paint. We are going with a real rich black, with ghost flames on the hood and comming out of the side vents. Nothing to obvious, but very subtile.

The sidepipe I think are going to be powdercoated in a silverish something. Not sure exactly yet, but I have to talk to the powdercoater to see whats avail.

I will continue to update the pics as we continue. Thanks to all for reading this and to all the great people here who help others in their projects. Heres the link to the pics. Let me know what you think:

I dont remember what its call, but I was planning on postin a pic on the site of the can, just thought of it today. Tried to go over there but a 20 mile drive on roads that are ice covered didnt work to well, so I'll try again tomorrow.

As for total time involved its hard to saybecause I wasnt keeping times, but there was about4 days where I did an hour or two and one full day. Total I would say we have about 15-20 hours in it so far.

It doesnt take to long. You brush the stripper on in real thick coats, let it sit for about 5 minutes, Then scrape it off with a plastic scraper. Since the paint was so thick on that car, I am putting on a second thick layer after the about 5 minutes and it will liquify the paint to the point it comes off very easy.

There are two different types of paint on the car. The black is "breaking " apart into small pieces, where as the orange is "melting" into a goo.

Some of the later pics are after the passenger side has been sanded with a mouse sander to smooth it a little.

This is not taking nearly as long as I thought it would. I thought it would take till the end of the month just to prep the car. She is thinking the paint may be done by the end of the month!!!!

We will see how the rest of it goes. So far so good.

Please see my "I'm I crazy?" posting. I've removed the doors and hood and removed anything that wasn't in place at the factory before the car was painted. I want a "factory" paint job without removing the body from the frame. I won't go that far.

One helluva job ain't it??

I will be doing that to my 77 once I get settled with all the mechanical things. Fortunatly I only have 2 layers of paint, the stock butternut/tan crap and the REALLLLLY HORRIBLE maroon paint job on it now. (He painted over the pinstripes )

How are you disposing of the paint? Make sure you post what you are using , From the pics it looks like it does a GREAT job.

Good work!! Can't wait to see more!

Thanks guys!!!!

As a side note, The under color is orange, the flash made it look yellow.

As for the muscle pain , but none yet scraping is not as hard as sanding.

For now the paint is going in a garbage bag witht he newspaper, After that not sure...

Ill be there again tomorrow, and will get more pics

I would be proud if I inspired someone else!!!

Looks like you are doing a really thourough job, should come out real nice. I'm suprised that's all the time you have in it, or is that just for stripping paint. I'm sure that does not include disassembly of the car.

I keep getting side tracked with other projects, Like a new motor but mine is fully stripped (razor blades), most imperfections repaired a full coat of epoxy primer and 2 coats of 2k sandable primer.... LOTS of hand sanding to go but so far I've got 50 or so hours in mine.... But I broke both bones in both forearms so I'm a little slower than I used to be

looking good!!!!

How does the razor blade work? Does it leave any gouges?

Yea the paint stripper is pretty quick. As for disassembly, that was prob about another 8 hours. The side pipes were a PITA. And of course a lot of screws broke so it took a little longer than it should, but thats the nature of old cars. I'll put anti-seize on most parts for reassembly. But first there are a handful of holes that need to be drilled an retapped.

I'll be back there tonight to get some more done, so I will make sure to get a pic of the stripper on there. I'll leave a note when I add mre pics. I havent gotten over there the past 2 day due to the ice storm a couple days ago, but Im off work tonight so Im there.

Thanks again to all for the kind works and support. I was scared gjoing into this, but the support has kept the confidence up!!!

Thank you all.
