Best way, both off and back on.

I'm thinking about doing it the same way. I have a really low ceiling, and limited space (1 car garage). Is this way really safe? I might also be removing the nose, to work on the bird cage. Is it better to do this before removing the body, or should you remove it as a whole?

Nice thread...I might have to go over to Sam's and get that picker they had on sale! Those that used a cherry picker...what is the market price range for those?

I would do any major bodywork with the body on the frame. The body is very flexible and to get all of the alignments correct, the frame will jig it all in place. Also, align the bumpers on the frame so you can build the body to match the bumpers.

We then took the body off, and did the frame. At the same time, the body was being blocked sanded. And the underside of the body was cleaned and repaired. A lot of work under there. When the frame was complete, it was wrapped in plastic, and the body remounted through the plastic. .

Paint was then applied, the plastic keeping overspray off the chassis.

We rolled the chassis into the driveway and did the body lifts, then back into the garage.

IMHO, with 7-8 guys it was not that heavy. Take the doors off especially if they are loaded, a lot of weigh there. Also the advantage to guys is that it makes it easy to reshim the body if you need to.

Thanks for the info. Now, what do you do with the body once you get it off? I guess you build a dolley, out of wood?
