Default 77 turn signal switch & stalk replace ?'s

I took my '77 to get an inspection sticker today- after the mechanic manhandled my turn signal stalk (you think that would be against the law or at least he would have bought me dinner first) trying to get the high beams on ----he asked me to do it so he didn't break it ---- of course, as soon as I touched it, it fell off in my hand - and while it has come out before and I just shoved it back in -- this time it is actually broken -- with a small bit still stuck in there somewhere -----

-----but that isn't what this thread is about

I am about to purchase a turn signal switch and have Ecklers sending me the one year specific turn signal stalk.

Finally to the questions ----- is this all I needed? No other parts or pieces in there? The new stalk will just push into the new switch? Any tips or I've done it myself stories?

thanks in advance

hey rrent

I am in the process of rebuilding a 77 column to install in my 71.
I had a problem removing the entire piece but Jim Shea helped me out.

check this out:

But I think that this is what you are taking about.
Jim made these too.

Hope that this helps

Here is the breakdown at to how your steering column switch and lever work.

The turn signal lever plugs into a plastic pivot that is attached to the side of the steering column. The pivot is unique for 1977 because it also has the windshield wash/wipe switch as a part of it.

The pivot engages a small stamped lever inside the column that attaches to the turn signal switch.

So the turn signal lever is independent of the turn signal switch.

So unless your turn signals aren't working or you have other information that your switch is bad, you most likely don't need a new switch.

If you have just the stub of your turn signal lever stuck in the pivot, the following is a paper along with a drawing of two very simple tools that will greatly help you remove the broken stub without having to disassemble your steering column.

I hope that you don't need to replace your 1977 pivot with the windshield wash/wipe switch since it is very difficult to find. This special pivot with the wash/wipe switch was also used in the Chevette.

Ken -- thanks - that helps a bunch --- as loose as the stalk has been for awhile I'm probably going to need a "1977 Windshield Wiper Switch With Pivot" --- how lucky am I - Eckler's has them for only $92.99 and all the other years are $29.99 --- you don't suppose thats just a typo?

Great day --- great day --- the local Chevy dealership can order the part for $74.00

Jims -- thanks - I've printed those articles and will stash them away for future reference

If the stalk was in fact loose as a goose ---- I've had to hold the stalk to use the turn signal and haven't used the hi-beams (except for yearly inspection) in years ---- do you think a new wiper swirch pivot is the way to go?

Do you have the GM part number for the pivot and switch assembly? I think there is one for the standard (non-adjustable) steering column and one for the T&T.

I see that the pivot and switch assembly listed in the Eckler's and Zip catalogue is for the T&T.

My stalk was loose and did the exact same thing- fell out in my hand. I bought a new one and fretted about installing it for weeks. It just popped right in and is snug as a bug; took me about a minute. Your stalk might have been loose due to one of the fittings on the stalk breaking, and thus every time you use it you are straining the metal....

As long as the pieces come out okay, you might be able to fix it all without disassembly.

GM part number is 007827152 and cost $87.22 (instead of the phone quote of $74.00) ----- I'll re-read the instructionsI printed earier -- but it sounded like I can do most of this from the top? Other than plug the blue wires in.

The stalk might be it --- if so, I'll have a very reasonble priced switch/pivot for sale
