Found my mufflers! I went with Dynomax Super Turbos, 2.5". I got them at Advance Auto Parts of all places! $39.99 each, Summit has them for 36.88, ....but, I got the Dynomax header reducers for 19.99 versus 21.95 from Summit. All in all, I spend $4.26 more in product cost, but no shipping! The store also had the Dynomax Ultra Flow mufflers for $79.99 each, but the "straight through" design looked like it might be a bit on the loud side like my current Flowmaster setup. My muffler shop says they make their own x-pipes, and they will let me stay "under the car" with them while they work. So THursday, the new system goes in!!! Thanks everyone for your help!
Super! Please post back here as to how pleased you are with the new sound. As someone who still needs to install exhaust (open headers at the moment), I am always interested in the opinions of everyone on the different mufflers available. And, like you, I'm interested in something with a growl, but I want to hear my wife speaking when the time comes! I suppose at 47 I'm just getting old - I want it reasonably quiet!
OK, the Flowmaster 40's are coming off, I'm almost deaf after a 70 mile drive yesterday. I'm looking for quiet turbo mufflers, and I found these Summit turbo mufflers for $14.75 each.....but are they quiet at cruising? I also see Heddman turbos ($30) and Hooker turbos ($28) as a possibility? I really like that cheap price, anybody have them??? I "searched" but no old messages came up.
I went for the Holley Flowtech Warlock mufflers which are very mellow (quiet) with the caps on. But with the caps off ~ they're WICKED BAD LOUD as in "straight pipes" !!!
System is In! Sound is "quiet" at idle, just a noticable little rumble. Sounds good but still quiet at speed, comes alive when you step on it. Bummer was that while I was under it on the rack, I discovered that my composite spring from Muskegoen (sp?) is cracked!! How did that happen, I'll never know. $250 for a lifetime spring that cracked after less than 500 miles. Bummer.

Where are the photos ???
They hopefully send you a new spring - this should never happen, especially after only 500 miles...

I'm looking for new mufflers as well. Thanks for the report back. Were you able to use your exhaust tips or did you have to purchase new ones?
Saved the "old" ones. They are actually tips for a '73. These tips have the exhaust exit through the center of the tip, and they're listed as 2.5" tips. They're actually closer to 2.25, but they can be expanded to fit over the muffler pipe. '70-'72 tips exhaust tips do not have the pipe exiting through the center of the tip, and the pipe is a bit smaller. For those reasons, I like the '73 tips better.
I have the Dynomax super turbos on mine. I have 2 1/2" from C4 manifolds back. Sometimes I think they are a little loud, but overall I am very pleased. I also got the generic ones (from Jegs) and made them work.
I ran Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers, and liked the sound inside and outside the car. I recently upgraded my '59 from a 2.00" system, with unknown long, tube mufflers, to a 2 1/2" system with large case Dynomax Ulraflow mufflers. The difference in sound and performance was impressive. The car has a lower, deeper tone, and is quieter at all RPM ranges. I did not add an "H" pipe (yet), and the pipes exit under the car, not out the back as the old 2.00" system did. The Ultraflows are a little quieter than I remember my Super Torbo mufflers being. Plus, the ultraflows flow over 400CFM each. I would definitely consider the Ultraflows if I were looking to replace or upgrade an existing system.
Regarding the performance difference. My car was choked with the smaller system and would start to nose over around 4800-5000 RPM, but could still lay 60 ft of rubber. Since the upgrade, the car pulls harder to 6000 RPM, and will blow the tires away longer than I care to stand on it. The new system caused the engine to run a little lean, so I upped the jets in my primary 2 sizes.
