Default Instaling radio

Anybody instaled a radio on a 78. I took mine to a shop and they said they would have to cut the console and something about an oil line.

Oil line to the oil pressure gauge? Don't know why that would be involved. As you can see from OHSIXX's picture, you have to make the hole larger. I'm about to do this, maybe this weekend, but I don't have the trim piece I think I need.

You can get the trim piece from your local "Rolling Sounds" or whatever it is named in your area. It was $15 bucks!

what are you guys using to cut the bezel? and how? are you using a template or just "free-forming" it?

Mark the deminisions on the bezel and cut it with a dremel tool. Err on the small side. You can always trim more off.

I just bought a 12amp Craftsman Sawzall, maybe I'll use that?

Seriously though, I plan to dremel. Thanks for the tip on the trim piece.

I saw in one of the vendor catalogs bezels that were pre-cut. I guess if you wanted to save your original one you could try that. Maybe it was Ecklers.

No oil line on a 1978. The oil pressure gauge is electric.

An invoice I got from Willcox 3 days ago:

1 XXX4801 1.00 1.00 4/EA 210.0000 210.00 E

DASH BEZEL CENTER 68-71 W/CD CHANGER OPENING. "TEXTURED LIKE THE 68-71 CARS."

Dash center bezel with DIN radio: (as shown here) http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...LMTVJFPWPH92RD

The bezels are $210 with a DIN radio opening

Their regular dash bezels are $105 a piece (part #56)

Magic is right...the $97 was an 'uncut' bezel...guess it takes $100.00 worht of time to cut it....

Is there a reason you are cutting the bezel instead of buying one that fits from Ecklers? I'm not up on radio technology and wondering what the Eckler option is missing?

A lot of guys here have reported that they had poor results from those 'Custom Autosounds' units...They are underpowered and don't pull in FM stations very well...I just pulled one out of my 71 and am in the process of cutting the bezel and installing a modern CD player with 200w of power...new FM receivers are much more sensitive and can pull in and hold stations better and with new speakers you need power to drive them...so, the choice is to cut the bezel(or buy one cut) or put in the Custom Autosound receiver...both require getting the bezel out so you can get behind it...not as hard as you think...

I mounted my new stereo in the back of the car and use a remote to change the radio.I left the orginal radio in the dash so when you look quick you say that sound comes out of that factory radio ! ! ! ! ! Just my .02 cents

I'm one of the unfortunate ones who bought a Custom Autosounds unit.
