airconditioning on 72 was not an option if you ordered a bigblock. Once I get the restoration finished, is there an aftermarket a/c that I could have put in? how much can I expect it to cost installed? what would they use for switches? has anyone had this experience?

There are a couple of companies that offer a kit for C3's.. try Vintage air, Classic auto air. I have NEVER heard that BB 72's couldn't be ordered with AC, I've been into corvettes for more than 30 years. I don't know where you got that idea.
From what I've read, it appears that it's beneficial to perform the following:
1. block off all the fresh air inlets? Is this true?
2. Replace the insulation on the inside of the firewall? What's best?
I'm hoping to do this in the spring before summer.
Has anyone here used Hot Rod Air?
I installed Hot Rod Air before the car went to paint. I have not charged the system yet, but the install is complete. One thing you will find with Hot Rod Air is the manual is scanned black and white photos and is not very helpful. I took the time to take pics of my install if anyone is interested. It is pretty straight forward once you figure out where everything goes.
Larry is correct all '72 Corvettes could be ordered with AC-even LT-1s. The LT-1s had special low redline tachs to keep the AC belt from flying off.
The only earlier BBs that were not offered with factory AC were the solid lifter versions (396/425 HP, 427/425 HP, 435 HP, 430 HP, 454/425 (in '71), and if they ever sold one the 465 HP-454 LS-7). Even tri-power 400 HP 427s were available with AC.
It is possible to install factory AC into a non AC car, but it is difficult. The firewall needs to be modified - both filled AND cut, and if you want it EXACTLY like it came from the factory, you need to rework the kick panel ducting.
