I know you can take the front brake calipers off to get the front brake pads changed easily, but how do you guys change the back with the dual plungers on both sides. I have used just about everything I have but still the things want to kick sideways. Any secret to changing them or any special tools??
On my 68 I just use a regular carpenter "C" clamp to push the existing pad away from the rotor by clamping against the outside of the caliper. This forces the pistons SLOWLY back in to their bores, then I slide the old pad out and IMMEDIATELY slide the new pad into place. Do that for the inner and outer pad on each wheel and you are done. You are squeezing the pads against the caliper which acts to force the pistons back into their respective bores which in turn provides enough clearance to get the new pads into place. Once you've removed the tires the whole job takes less than 1/2 hour to do both rear wheels. You remove the cotter pin and the large pin that holds the pads, remove the old ones and pop in the new ones.

You DONOT have to remove calipers... front or back. Changing pads is a two minute job per wheel. Remove the wheel, remove cotter pin, remove through pin, slide out old pads (work them back and forth firts to force the pistons and fluid back towrd the MC). Install new pads... There is a tool to hold the pistons back but a thin piece ot stiff plastic or metal works fine.
