I have a friend that has an L82 and is rebuilding his engine. Are the L82 heads any differnet than the L48 heads and are they worth rebuilding? the guy is on an extremly tight budget. Thanks.
i had a an L82 and it had 624 castings 202 valves, screw in studs and pushrod guide plates from the factory, big chambers but they flow as good as or better than old castings (441-461-462 etc, etc) so for a guy on a tight budget, yes they are very good..........fred
The L82 castings are the same as the L48 castings (76cc chambers). The only difference is the bigger valves. They are lightweight castings that are prone to cracking. So my answer is "no."
Personally, I'm swapping my heads for a set of Summit Racing heads (which are actually Dart Iron Eagle S/S heads with bigger valves). At $650/set, they're hard to beat.
For someone on a tight budget and not building a screamer of an engine, your heads should be fine if they are in good shape (ie no cracks). If your looking to build a 300HP + motor then I would agree to be looking into a better set of heads.
But if your keeping the L82 stock, I would at least get a 3-angle valve job, new valve guides and seals, and gasket match the ports. This work alone will probably cost about $200+ (price it out before making your decision). In any case it's still your desicion.
