Breather Element. you can get it at Napa and it stops oily crap fro getting into your carb and back into your engine. just look at it, its filled with crap, imagine what your engine would run like without that there
If your talking about an '81, originally they had a Blue looking "charcol" type filter that sat inside the A 348 C paper air filter. I don't know if they even sell these new anymore, but I see them at swap meets every now & then.
Your right Paul, it's an 81. Did some more checking on it and supposedly its a flame suppressor. Pre 81's were susceptible to engine fire so they added this part. The GM guy I spoke with told me these are very rare and hard to find. I am wondering if the 81 vette was the only vehicle with that part, or were there other 350's with it. He told me not to run the engine without it, and not to damage it. He said I could clean it by spraying carborator cleaner on it, flush it with water and lay it in the sun to dry. This whole thing started because I was trying to get rid of the rust in my air cleaner. So I had to take the part off (was glued on with silicone, beech to get off without damage) Good news is, air cleaner is at the powder coaters now, for $50.00 he say's it will outlast the car. HOPE NOT
The 82s have a small charcoal filter on the outside of the filtercover where the PCV breather tube connects to. The charcoal will trap hydrocarbons just like your evap. cannister.
