1974 Hood Release Question

1974 Hood Release Question
New to the forum guys, so I'd appreciate any help you can point me to.
Recently my 74 was broken into and the vandals pretty much trashed the driver's side dash area. One serious problem I have is that they managed to tear out the hood release cable, and I have no way of getting the hood up. FYI, the hood release cable seems to have broken up inside the engine compartment, or come completely free.
Is there anyway to release the hood from underneath the engine compartment, or does anyone have a simple suggestion?

there's a plastic plug under the hood opposite where the mechanism is on the drivers side , pop it out and catch the cross wire with a hook.pull on it and it should release it.
believe it or not i saw a chrome bumper vette at a vette recycling yard with 2- 4 inch square holes cut in the hood.
