NICE! I BUILT VERY ONE VERY CLOSE TO THAT. BUT I TIG WELDED MINE AND I KEPT IT STRAIGHT IN THE BACK. I HAVE A HOLE FOR THE TOP OF DIST. BUT COVERED IT WITH RUBBER COVER FROM FORD DISTRIBUTORS. I RIVETED THE BOTTOM AIR CLEANER PLATE TO THE BOX. I LIKE YOUR RUBBER SEALS BETTER THAN MINE, I USED DENSE FOAM
GrandSportC3, That's very close to what I was envisioning except in aluminium. What holds it to the carb? Am I correct in assuming that the square stock at the back is very close to the crossmember when the hood is closed. Is your seal some kind of automotive weather stripping? Do you have a picture of it up against the hood?
Jughead, Do you know if these are available in the aftermarket? I tried searching through all the standard Corvette suppliers and found nothing. Is that held on the hood by some kind of glue or is glassed in?
Marks69BB, My manifold is a Chevy Performance Parts High Rise HO. When you say 5.25", at what point are you measuring from? The top of the valley? Without measuring, I know I have about .385" clearance over the carb.
redc3, I sure would like to see some pictues of yours. What gauge did you use?
Thanks again!

Check Ecklers.com That's where I got mine. About $100, I think. It's "glassed" in if you want to call it that. I used a 5 min epoxy in a few areas to get it adhered to the hood. Then I filled in all the spaces & openings around the perimeter with fiberglas resin.
patrick i used 1/8 sheet aluminum, cut with a jig saw. i made the radius on a tree stump in my back yard, but its smooth youd never know it! like i said i riveted the filter base to the bottom sheet and it attaches just like stock air cleaner would. im new at this comp junk and will ask the better half to get her digital camera out. its polished and looks kinda cool. id still like to know what the rubber seals are he used.
redc3,
In case you are still wondering, I found some great sealing material at Cabelas. It's for sealing boat hatches. I've got plenty; if you want some, email me at jpatrick636@sbcglobal.net

I know Chuck Harman with his L-88 had some real life testimony on the benefits of the air box. I can only say that when I had my SB I could notice a change in the engine performance at 60mph+.
The air chamber isn't aligned with the BB carb so I can't say about the 454. I need to cut out the old chamber, realign a new one and glass-in.
OK. I have obtained some sheet aluminium and I have some sealing material. I notice that everybody used a droped air cleaner base. I was thinking of just going strait from the top of the carb back to the hood opening and sealing to the hood. Does anybody think the drop base would be of any advantage?
