Default pollution controls

79 L82 had all pollution controls removed before i got it. modified with aluminum heads and intake manifold and has headers. still has original Q-Jet.

what would it cost to replace all the stock pollution controls and pass emissions tests.

Just took the 81 to have it inspected and the kid at the inspection station said that possibly next year texas will try to start smoggin cars...God!..I hope I can squeek under the rolling 25 year exemption...argh getting close!!!! Default Re-Smog

A complete A.I.R. system that has been reworked and numbers matching will fetch 700-800. The exhaust manifolds probably have the holes plugged and injectors pulled. If ok and not stripped out holes you are lucky, if not look at about $300 per side.

EGR valve is cheap about $50, but the cost goes way up if you have to look for an intake manifold if that is gone. Then look at another $150 or so. Catalytic converter needed? Not bad for a high flow at about 150 plus exhanust work.

Valves, wiring, solenoids etc can run another 200-300. When you add it all up the 1500 -2000 is not far off.

Finally, your labor or someone elses???? Look at local labor rate.

Greyghost.

The answer to your question also depends on where you're trying to register your car. There a significant state to state and even county to county variations. I think that $1500 is a good guess but this can vary considerably.

I say this because here in CA, your aluminum heads are, technically, not acceptable. Truth is it is extremely unlikely that an inspector would notice. Same goes for a cam change. Smog pump and cat are another issue. Pretty obvious if these are missing.

Your best bet is to find a complete system somewhere. Try the Vette boneyards or Ebay. Some of the stuff may interchange with more common impala or even camaro stuff. A big show/swap meet might also be a good place to look. I would figure at least $1000 if everything is missing.

I did that calculation about four years ago using a popular Corvette parts catalogue. The various parts totalled out at about $2,200.

I had a friend just do that to his '79... he had nothing.. no smog pump, no brackets, wrong manifold, carb, exhaust, etc.. He is about 3k into it but hasn't gone to the station yet.

Good Luck

If you live in Texas, put antique plates on the car. No inspections whatsoever. Not supposed to use it as a daily driver, though.
