Default Gas Tank Advice Needed

Two questions for the experts:

1. I recently replaced the gas tank on my 74, I neglected to replace the cardboard? liner for the straps that hold the tank. Of course, now that I'm all done, I worry that perhaps I should have put some sort of an insulator between the tank and the straps. What is the opinion of you who know??

Thanks to all.

Sounds like those are your anti-squeak pads. Look in a Corvette catalog and they will diagram it for you and you can see if that's what you left out. I believe they glue to the undersides of the mount straps.

By all means you need to have something between the straps/supports and the tank. Along with the potential for squeaks, you will surely get corrosion where they contact.

The insulators were not cardboard; a type of felt paper perhaps, but cardboard will just retain water and deteriorate. The originals are available and not terrible expensive, but I have used strips of linoleum in the past for this purpose and it works well.

Just drop your spare tire carrier and do the straps and supports one at a time. You can support the end of the tank your working on wit a jack and a few blocks of wood.

The anti squeek pads that go under the tank straps are just roofing felt(tar paper). If you see a roofer stripping a roof, stop and take a couple scraps pieces. After loosening the bolts, slip a cut to size piece under the strap. You could also use a piece of tire innertube and ?? if you dare to be different.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I sorta figured that that nagging feeling of not doing it right, was there for a reason.

That's all they are....Roofing tarpaper. I ordered them for mine when I put the new tank in and about dropped my teeth when I saw what I spent 16 bux for. For what I spent I could have bought a whole roll and suppplied everyone on the forum that needed "anti-squeak" pads for their ride...and still had a lifetime supply leftover

I did the same thing but the anti squeak pads sit under the tank on the supports, they dont go under the straps.

Both - pads under the tank and under the straps.

Newer cars use rubber strips. My vette will have rubber.
The tanks almost always rust here ....
due to rubbing the tank with the strap (worn pads) or due to
the old paper absorbing water.
Anyway, I like the tire inner tube idea.

Yes, you are right, I put the tar paper under the tank. At 56 my CRS is to blame.

There were no pads under my straps. The only pads on mine were the anti-squeak pads that go under the tank and on top of the tank support and rear frame crossmember. My tank was clean as a whistle (looked new) under the tank straps, but rusted through at the tank support where the anti squeak pad is located.
