I hear everyone talking about flowmasters and dynomax super turbos and all different types of muffler systems but nobody ever mentions glass packs. Are they bubba? Im pretty sure my car has glass packs. They are home made side pipes under the aftermarket fiberglass sidepipe covers. There is what i would call "a glasspack" that is welded into the pipes. It basicly looks like a larger diameter pipe that acts like a muffler. It sounds awesome, a low grow at idle and it screams at WOT. I was thinking about doing away with the side exaust and putting an under car system back on it. If i put glasspacks on the car instead of mufflers would it sound the same? Would I get massive ressonence in the car? Thanks
Most of the straight through designs like Dynomax Ultraflows, Magnaflows, Edelbrock, etc. are nothing more than the old style glasspacks with a bigger internal pipe and better insulation. If you like them I would keep them.
Glasspack mufflers are typically just mufflers with some sort of ported design inside that redirects some of the exhaust flow into high temp fiberglass to help muffle the sound a bit. They usually now go by the brand Cherry Bombs, which I believe incorporates a chambered design AND fiberglass packing.

Take a look at the best flowing "oval" mufflers, they are nothing more than a straight perforated pipe in a large sound absorbing case

Go with what you like. The Flowmaster has a great sound, and it still keeps a stock-look. I would go with whatever sounds good, and keeps you happy....after all, it's your car. Good luck!!

just like ALOT of products, they will re-invent the wheel to sell you a new and improved version of what you already have. often with a negative result. i would also suggest PURPLE HORNIES if your gonna keep the glasspack theme. its a straight through design that bolts directly to your headers. if thats not bubba, ill kiss your ask. all hail bubba
I had Cherry Bombs on my 69, not only did they sound good, but they looked good, too. I've heard that the old style glass packs had restricted flow due to the louvers they used, but the newer ones use perforated tubes and flow better. Joe

I have supertrapps, which I guess are glasspacks. They're pretty loud, so I might go get a proper muffler at some point.
Supertrapps aren't packed with glass, they use wavey plates to disperse the exhaust and quiet it down, some. The more plates the louder the exhaust and less restriction, if it is too loud for you, you can remove some of the plates. Joe

It's actually a two-stage system. The air first goes through a straight section of perforated pipe surrounded by sound-absorbing material. Then it goes through the discs.
Removing plates doesn't do much for the sound because I use open endcaps (the normal closed ones look odd). I actually don't mind the noise directly. It's just that I don't want every cop in a 1/2 mile radius to know whenever I hit the gas .
