Default Corvette for sale -from overseas - is it a scam

Hello,
As the seller, I would like to take a moment to personally thank you for your interest in my 1969 Chevrolet Corvette. I know that you have many choices out there and I appreciate your interest. I hope you are serious in your intention for buying. Anyway, the car is available and I guess you could be it`s owner if everything turns out all right and you are serious about buying. The car looks and runs exactly as new. The title is clean, on my name, and you will receive it along with the vehicle, so you will have no problems whatsoever registering it there. It has 37000 miles. Here are the features of the car:

- L71 435HP/427 CI engine
- M21 4 speed close ratio trans.
- G81 Positraction rear axle
- F41 Special front and rear suspension
- C07 Auxiliary Hardtop
- A85 Custom shoulder belts
- A01 Soft ray tinted glass, all windows
- UA6 Alarm system
- U15 Speed warning indicator
- U69 AM/FM stereo radio

I am very fond of my Chevy, and I only hope that whoever buys it will take good care of it. I am located in Zagreb, Croatia. My final price on this is US 8.000 $. I know it seems a little low, but I will be quite happy to get rid of it, believe me, ever since my brother passed away, it just sits useless in my garage, and nothing would make me happier than to know that the car will be taken care of and loved as my brother Daniel did. If you will take this price, I am willing to pay for shipping and insurance to your location. I ONLY accept payment though a third party service, which will ensure the funds and hold them until you have the car there, and will guarantee I get the money after you have the car. If you are an honest buyer, I believe you will have no objection to this. I also agree to have the car shipped back to me on my expense if you find it unsatisfactory in any way other than described, in which case you will be fully refunded. I do not know pretty much about theese machines, but I will be happy to assist you in any way. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, I can provide more photos and info if we can close this deal.

I've sold cars on ebay and have dealt with overseas bidders. They can open a Paypal account and deposit the money into your paypal account with ease. Paypal deals with all forms of money and makes the transactions safe, confidential and almost scam free. Just remember to never let the car leave until all funds are withdrawn and safely in your personal bank account CLEARED. Also this gives you the security of not giving out any personal information to a stranger.

Default Don't write off overseas buyers!

Vttedrm has it right I've bought four cars from forum members this way without a hitch and had them shipped to Australia. There is no way that a proper bank transfer can be risky to the seller.

This way the buyer takes all the risk. The seller often has the buyer's money and the car for quite a while until shipping and import documentation is organised. Don't be too hasty to write off an overseas buyer, particularly another forum member that is well known here!

Here's another scumbag to watch out for. He contacted me through Vetthound. Here's the email below:
Hello Steve,
Thanks for the email. Please I have a client who is very much interested in buying your vehicle. He happened to budget for a car last time but unfortunately it was sold. So i have discussed with him and he has agreed that he will be willing to have the vehicle shipped to Canada upon reaching an agreement with you. I even tried giving you a call but didn't go through. Kindly permit me to ask few things about the condition of the car although it's all stated in the A.D but i need to know the exact state or condition of the car presently, how many mileage is on it presently? any mechanical fault? what of the engine and please your bottom price is required. Your early response will be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Marvin.

Below is my client's information
MAJ .Schneider Adams
454 2nd RD E,
Stoney Creek,
ontario L8J 2X9.

Here is my reply:
Let me make a suggestion to you. Why don't you come and look at the car, this way I can kick your *** when you get here for trying to scam people. Don't ever contact me again or waste my time.

Watch out for this guy, as well as ALL the others out there just like him.

The real scam is the fact that the cheque they send is a real cheque with forged signature. There is no way your bank is going to be able to determine it is a forgery in a few days. THey look at whether or not the account has the funds in it, if it does they "clear" the cheque and the money goes into your account.

You say hooray you got your money and you send the gent who sent you the cheque a money order wire transfer ( cash )and the car. Now he has his money and no one can get that back from him. Now a month later some poor guy in England or whereever is looking over his bank statements and cancelled cheques and sees the forged cheque and phones the bank and police. Now your bank freezes the money in your account because it was obtained illegally by a forged cheque you gave them..I guess you get the idea, you just lost the money you sent the guy, maybe a car and now the police are investigating you for forgery.
I knew that there was a hitch to this - I even talked to someone at my bank and the didn't mention that possibility. How on earth do you protect yourself from this happening? Joe

I am an overseas buyer, we all 'understand cash for keys'. Best option for us is a bank cheque through a bonded agent.

It works both ways though, a friend of mine paid for a hot rod in advance in good faith, did not use a bonded agent, he has never seen the car and the money is gone.

A few of us fly the 12,000 miles, collect and pay for the cars personally, which is the best part along with seeing your great country.

Even though you drive on the wrong side of the road and dont play rughby !

Default Fraud

I am amazed that anyone who uses the net has not already been made aware of the overseas frauds. Let's get the word out so that the scammers success rate drops to zero then maybe they will go away! I had my car for sale on e-bay and the local edition of the Bargain News. I've had multiple attempts from various countries to "buy" the car. The tip off is that they want very little or no information and are willing to jump on any price you offer. Then there are many different lines that they feed you to try and get your money or your account numbers. If they won't call on the phone they are not for real. E-bay and some of the other popular selling sites on the web have some fraud info that will list all the variations of the scam. Seller beware!

Default it happened to me

i posted my 77 on fossilcars.com for sale and got a person from the UK interested.

they sent me a bogus cashiers check, typed from a $30 ink jet printer. the cashiers check was $5,000 too much and they wanted me to get a cashiers check and send it to Altanta so the shipper could come get the car.

i called my friend at the local county police department and printed all the emails, gave him the check, and he contacted the FBI. they are still looking for the dude.

but fortunately i was smart enough to know better and my 77 is still tucked away in my garage!!

I just got this response for my 78' today. It all seemed too good to be true, considering this guy didnt care what my price was, nor did he know the real details about the car.

He hasnt contacted me back yet but I at least know to go cash only if this turns out to be anything real...but I wont hold my breath.

Default Am Familiar With Scams

The Internet Is Irresistible To Scammers. I've Had 3 Contacts That Are All Scams. They Send You An Innocent Enough Email Asking "is Your Car Still For Sale?" You Reply. Then They All Use A Standard Email Asking For Details, And Pictures. Then, Comes The Scam. Always The Same. They Have A Check Higher Than The Asking Price, And You Are To Refund Them The Difference! My Most Recent Scam Came From Canada. I've Reported Each Scam To The Ftc, And The Fbi. Doubt If The Scammers Will Be Contacted Since No Transaction Occurred.
It Is Known That Cashier's Checks Can Be Bogus. If I Sell My Vette, I Will Only Accept Cash, Postal Money Order, Or Take A Personal Check To My Bank And Clear It Before Releasing The Car. All Of Us Sellers Have To Be Patient, And Make Sure The Sale Is Legitimate.

Just put my CE up for sale over on Recycler and Craigslist.org, this forum was next on my list. Haven't been over here for a year, been busy with two vettes and now the new toy is an shadow green H3 de-blinged and we've been doing a ton of wheeling all over the place. And we moved to Moab UT from Ventura County Calif about 1 month ago. What a year! After mine sells, then I get to "inherit" Steve's C5 Hardtop, so I will still have a vette, just not a C3. But it's ok.

Thanks for this post a bunch, I'll be watching out for these now. Wow, guess you have to be super careful doing anything over the net these days. Cash it will be for me! Thanks again!!!!!

Hi to all my old friends here and glad to meet ya to the new one's. When I have more time, I'll most likely be hangin over in the C5 section and get a brush up on things.
