Default 1994 LT1 Basics

Love the pull of my new-to-me 94 with LT1. I believe my stock engine has an Al block and heads and roller rockers. Does it have 4-bolt mains, roller lifters, forged crank, etc? If anyone can provide details of the makeup of this glorious push-rod small block engine, I would appreciate it.

All LT1s have cast iron blocks with aluminum heads. They have 4-bolt main bearing centers and 2-bolt ends. LT1s have conventional stamped steel 1.5 rockers, while LT4s have aluminum 1.6 roller rockers. Not sure about lifters. LT1s have cast iron cranks.

Here is a good website for LT1 vs. LT4 comparison:

Wlecome to the Madness . Nice choice in cars, BTW

The 94 is the first LT-1 to have 3 O2 sensors.

It also is the first year with the different fuel rail.

It also is the first year PCM Computer controlled instead of ECM.

Ummmm Also is the first year of the updated interior 94-96 has the newer steering wheel and fatman seats.

The first year where all have a single sided drive belt.

Thats all I can think right now....

All the LT1s have roller lifters. If you went with a cam upgrade you wouldn't have to touch the lifters. It has 1.5 ratio rockers and a good easy upgrade is to change to 1.6 ratio roller rockers.

The PCM is very tolerant of changes/mods and unless you went wild on cam selection you would not have to reprogram it. You won't be in the loop of burning a new chip after everything you do to mod the engine.

If you get a dyno pull with the stock engine you will see that the torque curve is flat as a table. That's what you feel in the pull you describe.

94 is the year that they brought back the mas ari flow sensor, that was also the first year for sequential fuel injection.

Dumb question, but how else does a guy learn - here we go:

I have a '95 LT1 - What if any benefit would I get from installing 1.6 ratio roller rockers without changing out the cam? If I installed these roller rockers would I have to change anything else?

The LT1 also features reverse-flow cooling. The coolant flows through the heads first, then into the block. This allowed the higher compression ratio, which is 10.5:1 for the LT1 (10.8:1 for the LT4). The factory thermostat for the cooling system is a low 180 degrees, and don't fall for the temptation of swapping it out for a 160 degree thermostat-- LT1's run best with 180's.

1994 - 1996 is a good year to own of a C4 Corvette, but they're all quite good cars. For '93's and older you had to burn a custom chip to change the programming for the engine, but 94 - 96 have flash eprom's and can be programmed and re-programemd over and over again using a laptop PC, a special cable, and the right software running on the laptop. But there's little need to re-program unless you add some significant mods.

Don't spenmd the money for a Hypertech Power Programmer III or Plus, the GM tuning is very optimal for the stock setup adn the Hypertech "power tuning" does little if anything. The Hypertech Power Prgrammer is handy if your trans is an automatic (adjust shift points and shift firmness) but you have a 6-speed, so...

Stick with an AC Delco paper air filter, the K&N's let in too much dirt, and don't provide much benefit to a stock engine.

basically, just leave it pure GM stock until you decide to do real mods like hotter cam, roller rockers, headers, ported heads etc.

P.S. don't buy a code reader either, on '94's and '95's you can get error diagnostic codes to display on the LCD speedo readout using a paper clip bent into a U-shape. I'll have to find the link to the post I added to a thread that shows how to do that, but it works like a charm.

Benefit = approx 15 - 20hp gain. You would have to also change the springs to LT4 springs or other that would allow for the increased travel or the else the springs for the stock ratio would bind at full lift. And remove the drip tabs from inside the valve covers or use LT4 valve covers.

although its a 94' thread, mid year 93's was the cut in for programmable computers and elec auto transmission. Smooth box CCM covers indicates early year and finned covers late year.
