I have a 6 speed 92 vette. is it true that you have to use regular engine oil like 10w 30 or 5w 30. it just seems weird to use that oil in the trans and want to make sure. I want to change the oil and though i would ask before doing so.
No. Don't use just any engine oil. Most do not have the required friction modifiers for transmission duty.
You can use either GM 30wt transmission fill, or, I highly recommend Castrol TWS 10-60, it is available ONLY from your local BMW dealer. Expect to pay about 8.00 a litre - you will need three litres. The transmission takes just over 2 litres.
You will also need a breaker bar and 17mm allen head socket to remove the drain and fill plug - TIP: remove the fill first!!! It can be TIGHT; and you don't want to be stranded with a dry transmission. You will also need a small hand pump to fill with.
is royal purple any good, they have 10w 30 oil that they say is for the vette tranny, which is the same oil you can use in the engine. they even have the gm part number that matches with my owners manual for that oil. did anyone use royal purple for the transmission.
