Default Performance shifter??

I just bought an 89 Coupe with the six-speed transmission. When I took it for a testdrive, I noticed that it didn't have the "reverse ring" on the shifter e.g. you didn't have to push or pull on anything to put it in reverse. When I later sat in another six-speed Vette, I noticed that the throw was much longer, which leeds me to believe the one I bought has a performance or short-throw shifter. Can anyone tell me if I should leave it in, replace it with a stock one, etc? Does it hurt anything?

Thanks,

Carlos

If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Congratulations on the new purchase, and welcome to the best forum on the internet.

Take it out and send it to me before it causes you any more grief. I'll make sure to depose of it properly.

If you are noticing a difference in the throw between the two cars, you most likely have a short-throw installed. There is absolutely nothing bad about them at all. They are in fact a good thing. It makes shifting easier and faster.

remove the boot and take a peak down the shaft. B&M's bases are blue in color where Hursts are black. The hurst shifter will also feel like the stock one in shift quality where the B&M is very notchy like a race car feel. I have the B&M and now much prefer it over the Hurst... but that is my opinion... take it for what it's worht.

Carlos, first off you made a great choice with an '89 ZF-6
It surely sounds to me you have an aftermarket shifter. Its an improvement all the way around. Absoultely leave it in there.....cost to previous owner was at least $120-$200 for the shifter, and several hours of labor if he paid for that as well. So you made out nicely

Default Reverse?

Perhaps the GS has a different shifter, but mine does not require anything special to go into reverse other than putting it there. ????

That's because the early 6 speeds did have a lockout feature.

And it was an annoying feature I was very happy to get rid of once the Hurst was installed

You don't even have to remove the console. Just move the shifter boot down as far as you can around the shaft. If the shaft is silver it's a B&M. If it's black it's a Hurst.

Personally I prefer the B&M and don't care so much for the Hurst. Hurst owners feel exactly the opposite. There is no right or wrong, just personal preference. The one thing that almost everybody can agree on is that either choice is better than stock.

The B&M shifter was the second modification I made to my car. The first was disabling the CAGS 1-4 shift lockout. As such I've been driving my car for 4 years with the B&M and wouldn't want it any other way. I remember when my friend Brian first bought his 92 and he wanted me to drag race it. He still had the stock shift, I punched his dash on the 1-3 shift! Damn that hurt! He's since upgraded to the B&M as well.
