Default Price Variation

Man, how stupid is this... I need a new alternator for the Vette as mine is spiking up to 16.0+ during start-up, warm-up etc.

So I'm calling around this monring looking for prices and availability.

Here's what i got (Remember this is CDN $)

Canadian Tire South $149.00 3yr. warranty

Canadian Tire North $204.99 3 yr. warranty

Silver Automotive $171.25 2 yr. warranty

NAPA Automotive $171.74 2 yr. warranty

Dealership $267.25 1 yr. warranty

Canadian Tire is like your "Auto Zone" We have 2 of them here and they are $50 different on their price, I even had him confirm that it was the same part and not the alternator for the ZR-1? That doesn't make any sense, it's the same damn company? This is not the first time that their prices have varied though.

I think though that I may go with the dealership, as I prefer to spend the most money and receive the shortest warranty period. NOT.

The only one that has one in stock is Silver Automotive, but Canadian Tire South can have it here tomorrow, so I think I'll save the $22.00, take an extra year warranty and wait until tomorrow.

Do you guys south of the border deal with this much price variation as well?

Oh wait, it gets better - I forgot to call Auto Value Parts.

Called them up, $127.05 with a 5 year warranty.

Bingo. Called Canadian Tire back and canceled my order from them.

It always pays to shop around. Good deal on the alternator, though it makes you wonder how many people don't bother and pay $100.00 more than they have too...

Price variation is a given everywhere, I think. I just ordered a pair of KYB shocks and the prices ranged from 185.00 (not installed) from the local shop to 64.97 (including shipping) from Jegs.

I'm in SW Florida by the way. This time of year, there are more Canadians down here than Floridians. Not that I'm complaining... I'm from Pennsylvania.

Now... who wants to help install them?

When I replaced the AIR pump last summer, Napa and Kragen had them for like 40 bucks but it was going to take 2 days to get it and I needed to hit the road. the only 'local' place that had one in stock was a dealer an hour and a half south... $350! We ended up driving north for a couple of hours and got it for $35

I didn't know GM offered warranty on alternators! I thought is was something like 30 days if any usually no warranty on electrical parts. I think my AC/Delco remanufactured one was like $130.

I believe GM makes a rebuild kit for the alternator, including the regulator. You might want to check on that - they don't bother to tell you that if you ask for the price of a new alternator.

Smack,
Those new or rebuilt prices? Same amperage on all? Different brands?
More details......would help us make better decisions when it comes time for us to buy the same thing.

rocco16,

They are all rebuilds, all 105 amps (stock), not sure on the brands for all of them.

Part number should be stamped on the case somewhere. The brush kit is part number 1989702. Have not found a regulator yet.

Silverbeast... the 10463257 is for the ZR-1.

I was aware of the fact that the ZR-1 (LT-5 motor) has a different alternator. I was clear when I made my phone calls that I was looking for an alternator for a 91 L98 (non ZR-1 car)

Phew, you had me scared there for a second!!! but thanks for ensuring I knew that there were 2 options.

Cheers.

Ok - the parts list does not designate ZR1 (of course). You may want to get in your yellow pages and see if there is someone who can rebuild your unit. I had mine rebuilt locally and only cost $100 - and I got to keep my original plus I knew the parts were correct. You never know what you're getting in a rebuilt unit. If you can't find someone locally or on Internet, let me know and I'll see if price is still the same and you can send it down here for rebuild.
