have a 89 thinking about having my engine detailed good idea or not?

Always a good idea to have your engine compartment looking tip-top. What does the detail job you are considering consist of?

Other than recommending typical stuff like cover distribtor and alternator, I suggest removing belt. Reinstall it when engine compartment is completely dry. Once in a while they chirp after a good soaking.

I wouldn't advise on a steam cleaning, but an engine cleaning is always a good idea. I just did mine with a water pressure soaker. I covered my distributor and alternator and used degreaser on everything that needed it and scrubbed the heck out of everything greasy. When I was done, I left it in the sun for a few hours to allow everything to dry. Then I detailed the engine with that stuff that makes everything nice and shiny. It came out really nice. It took a long time, but it was worth it.
