I am picking up a LT4 next week in Florida and driving it back to Illinois. Does anyone know what I should do about a license plate? Not sure if I need one to bring my new toy home, or if registering when I get back is good enough
Does your state offer something like a "Trip Permit" or a temporary license? You should check with your state DMV to find out what may be needed.
Does the car you are buying have current plates? If you have the current and valid registration from the seller along with a bill of sale, that should work too. Have the bill of sale notorized and that can help insure that the seller's name on the bill of sale matched his registation in case you get stopped for some reason.
Just keep at the speed limit so you don't get stopped along the way and have to explain things!
Thanks for the advise. The seller does have plates but is not willing to let me use them. I will check with the DMV tomorrow to see what they say. Driving a Vert 1,200 miles at the speed limit...that could be tough

If the seller is a dealer, they MUST provide a temp tag. Otherwise, when buying from a private seller you will have to get something from your states DMV.
If it's a private seller, your DMV should have a trip permit (in VA it was $10). You sign it, the person you bought it from signs it, you tape it in your back window and it counts as your license plate. The title (or other proof of purchase) acts as your registration.
I know what you mean about speed. I had to drive mine 10 hours straight to get it home. Of course, when you live in VA, the pervasive threat of eager state troopers lightens your right foot a little bit. I just set mine on cruise at the limit to be safe.

What is the purpose for issuance of temporary license plates?
Florida law provides for a variety of legal uses of temporary license plates. The most common is by motor vehicle dealers to allow customers who don't have a license plate to transfer to be able to drive their newly purchased vehicle off the lot. The license plates are valid for 30 days, which gives dealers ample time to apply for titles and registrations for their customers.
If you are not a dealer, but you have acquired another vehicle and transferred your license plate from your old vehicle to the new vehicle, a temporary license plate may be obtained from the tax collector's office so you may demonstrate your old vehicle while it is for sale.
Non-residents also are eligible to secure a temporary license plate for "in-transit" purposes if they purchase a vehicle in Florida and want to drive it back home. However, proof of insurance (from Florida or home state) and sales tax in the amount required by the home state must be paid. If you feel you may be eligible for a temporary license plate, inquire through your local tax collector's office or the regional DMV office that serves your area.
Thanks for everyone's help. It looks like I have to go directly to the Florida DMV when I get the car and register for a temporary plate to drive it home.
One thing I know for sure is that this forum is awesome. I just recently became a member and can't get away from it. Thanks to ALL

e-mail me, I'm seriously thinking about a road trip to Florida this week and this would be a great excuse if you haven't bought plane tickets already. I've made it to Daytona Beach in 14 hours.
I was actually able to work this in as a business trip. I will be flying down Monday for business Mon-Weds. I will be picking the car up later in the week. Thanks for the offer
Just go to a DMV in FL. All DMV's will provide you with a Temporary Registration. They'll give you a 7 to 30 day rear window sticker to drive home on. I just picked up my C5 in Chicago and drove back to CA with only the window sticker and never got pulled over. I had a few on my a$$ for a while to check things out, but the cherries never lit up. I also seen alot of others from various states doing the same thing while I was in route.
You'll be fine
Enjoy your new C4
I live in Florida and if you want, I'll call the local DMV and ask about the temp. tag and I'll ask if I can mail it to you. If you're interested, send me an email with all the info. (I'll need the license plate and VIN of the car you are buying).
Unless the seller has a personalized plate, I don't understand why he wants to keep it.
Let me know via email if you'd like me to do this for you.

That is what you need to do...I bought my 92 in Ft Laudrdale and drove it home to Cinci. I paid 5% of the tax in Florida and the rest when I got to Ohio. I knew about getting the Temp tag but I wasnt planning on paying tax untill I got registered in Ohio....the extra 5% almost broke me. Be sure to bring an extra 5%
