Lock the doors. Seriously, I'm not being a smartazz. Your profile says your car is a 96, so yours should be the same as mine (95). VATS equipped. Your key has to be in the ignition for the car to start, unless your VATS has been disabled. My car has an factory alarm so I'm pretty sure does to. Last summer me and my girlfriend were going out to eat and I had the top out. When we got out of the car at the restaurant, I locked the doors. Windows down and the top still out. My girlfriend looked at me like I had 9 heads. After dinner she went to the car while I was waiting on our waitress. I got to the door of the restaurant just as she reaches in the car and unlocks the door. As soon as she opens it......the alarm goes off. So of course I had to stand there for a minute and look at her like she had nine heads.

I've seen a few folks on here that say the GM security systems are worthless. As for me, I have no complaints about mine.

Install a steel plate (MAM sells them)between the battery and fender. Apparently thieves can jam a screwdriver through there into the battery disabling the VATS long enough to steal it. Don't know if this holds true on LT1 cars

I'd put a gas pedal lock on mine.

If they want it, they will get it no matter what you do. So I don't worry about it. I just lock the doors when unattended. I have an "agreed amount" insurance policy on it. So if it gets stolen, I get enough money to replace it with a newer one.

Leave a hungry Rottweiler in it. Just be sure to bring it a bone when you come back.

That won't necessarily work either, if the crook has a Mrs Rottweiler.

Lock the doors and keep it insured. Hell, I've often left it parked with the roof panel off. It's only a car after all.

Sorry to be off topic but ALL the insurance prices were about 2-3 times higher than what I pay now per month for my Vette. Right now I'm paying $100/month for a yearly premium, FULL coverage for my 89 Vette. The most expensive premium I ever had was $300/monthly for a 97-01 Acura Integra Type-R. The Integra WAS way less powerful than my Vette so why the hell was it more expensive? Was it because of the "Riceboy PB foot driver syndrome" when I just turned 20?? I know that car was more ticket catcher than my Vette is.

I thought about theft prevention methods a lot when I was looking for a '64 and planning on driving it daily. Came to the conclusion that with C2's, the thieves will get a DD one way or another. With C4 prices so down and my intention to have it look a little ratty (I don't want attention) I think the regular GM security systems will be all I need with just a little care about where it's parked for any legnth of time.

I have noticed the lack of attention that people give to standard car alarms (horns beeping, headlights flashing, etc) going off nowdays. I was thinking about some unusual attractive devices instead. Like a small smoke bomb underneath-not as big or as long lasting as a standard military smoke bomb, but enough to put up a noticable cloud of smoke. If you get too much/too long and don't get back in time the local fire dept might cut the roof off to find there's nobody in there!

Another scheme was to use a cell phone triggered by the tamper sensors to call my cell (have to get one). I may still try this to possibly catch parking lot hits. I don't carry anything except liability insurance and I don't think the ins co will write other types without expensive collision coverage and I've always considered that as "betting against myself".

Actually, anything unusual as far as attention getting devices combined with a unique arming system would be better than almost any standard factory system. A smart thief (yes Jonny, they do exist) will be more familiar with your factory security system than you are. I say almost because I think systems like Onstar with a GP tracker and a suitable unique trigger might be ideal if you can/want to afford them.

It's the same game as "how safe is safe"? What you feel comfortable with in your environment is what you need if that's paying for insurance, technical/ lifestyle procedures or other methods (trunk monkeys?). JM2CW

Haha, now that's what I'm talking about. LOL, how about a taser on the steering wheel, keyhole(s), or even on the door handles and locks if it can sense tamper for more than a minute or two. Maybe a flame thrower if it senses a big vibration, e.g. getting towed.

You might want to check this out. It also shows 2004 (a bit dated) anti theft devices for corvettes, as well as other cars.
