Default Thinking about installing a HURST Shifter???

Ruby6SP (Will) and I installed them on our Rubies today. The first one took us 3+ hours while the second one took us 1.5 hours. The shifter instructions were were OK when it came to taking some of the interior apart, along with illustrations but left out some of the small details that knowing in advance would have made the job easier. They failed to illustrate some of trickier parts so here's some documentation on the install.

Remove the shift ****, use a small screwdriver to pry out the shift pattern cap. With vice grips pull out the locking tab, comes straight out (don't punch yourself). Unscrew the shift ****.

Remove the 3 7mm screws holding the console plate and remove the console.

Take the 4 10mm bolts and studs off at the rubber boot and plate and remove the rubber boot. At the body the boot fits over the lip but is glued on, the glue stays sticky so there is no need for glue on reinstall.

Now cut the upper larger tie wrap holding the exterior lower boot on.

Remove the exhaust system, makes it a lot easier. God bless those who have done this out removing the exhaust

From underneath you have to cut another tie wrap, you'll see the exterior boot is connected to the trans at 2 spots on top of each other, top one looks square, bottom one looks round, cut the tie wrap at bottom (round) boot connection. (closest to the hand)

Disconnect the VSS connector.

Remove the shifter support, it bolts to the trans and the other end slides on a small shaft that comes out the rear of the exterior boot. Sorry no pic but you'll see from underneath.

Try not to pull that part of the boot all the way off here. You need to pry it off at the bottom to expose where the shifter (linkage) connects to the trans. You will see a wire retaining ring in the middle of here a pin is. Pry/slide the wire ring past the pin, there is almost a detent for it to rest in. Then drive out the pin, it isn't in there tight.

Once that pin is out (save it) you can pull the shifter out from the top.

Note the space where the shims are and note the position of the C clips at the shifter housing.

Remove one of the C clips at the housing and take out the pin. Now you'll have the shifter rod and the linkage (that connected to the tran where you took out a pin). The linkage comes off to go on the new shift rod.

Drive the pin out

Reinstall on to the new shift rod with new pin that has small C clips that is supplied in the kit. There are 2 concave washers that go in between that may take some aligning to get the pin in.

Reinstall assembly into shifter housing (larger C clamps)

When you do the above and have the new shifter ready to be installed slide that wire clip over the top pin hole, This will make it easy to drive that pin in the right amount.

Remember the position of the larger C clamps on the shifter housing (tab on top at pass side and tab on bottom on the drivers side) this will allow you to slip it in from up top.

From up top reassemble the boot and bolts that were removed.

From below get the linkage on to the trans connection. The rod out of the trans can be moved so you can slide the linkage on and have clearance to drive the pin in and remember to slide the wire ring back in place. Slide the boot back on and tie wrap. Reinstall the shifter support. Reconnect the VSS connection. Reinstall the exhaust.

From up top finish reinstalling the console trim and the shift ****.

Definitely worth it, big improvement over the stock shifter.

If anyone wants any more information, email me with your phone number, it would be a lot easier to describe some things.

My Hurst shifter has been under my desk for about 2 1/2 months now - I had my entire interior out, and chickened out - I have no problem pulling the interior items out - This documentation will be a HUGE help. I'll shoot you an email. This should be in the TECH TIPS section.

The interior items aren't all that bad. Go for it, I love mine.

I had my car in for rear gears and the tech was raving about my shifter, and all he did was bring it in the shop!

That's cool - Thanks!

Your car was one of my inspirations for GETTING a Corvette

It was one of the first C4's I saw - The profile shot of you on the highway with a big s**t eating grin on your face!!

Anyways, back to subject - Thanks for the tips.

That shot was taken 30 mins. into Corvette ownership, I still have the grin!

My car being inspriation is probably the best compliment I've ever gotten on my Vette.

CRUISE ON!

Hey John, when my time comes, I'll be calling you.

Note that on 1994 and later, removing the console door is necessary to remove the shifter plate.

Nice job posting the details John.

Anyone in the area that needs a hand give either John or I a shout and we can walk you through the install.

Like the first post said the instructions are a bit vague but once you understand the method behind the madness it's a cinch

The shifter makes a world of diffence in the C4's.. I'm not rowing a boat anymore!!

Mine took me about 6 hours and a ton of frustration, but definately worth it in the end. I'd do it again if I had to get another C4.

I would need more than a walk through, I would need John's help and time in his garage. After watching you guys I know for sure it's not a one person job or a jack stand job.

Where did you buy the shifters from? I need to get one.

[Edit] I just ordered one from Zip. Now I need to go buy some BMW gear oil to really improve this thing.

How much did you pay at ZIP?
I'll buy one for the Z and we'll do another shifter day. Maybe MOJO will do his too. Anyone else interested? We could bang 4 or 5 out in a day

What part of the Phila burbs are you from. I up toward the Ft. Washington area. I'm thinking about sticking one of these in my 93.

It's $149.95 plus shipping. I just got the confirmation email and the shifter is backordered. I wonder how long it will take?

I ordered it through the Corvette Store via the link on the left. Might as well give the profit to a forum vendor, I just hope it doesn't take too long to deliver.

[Edit] I just checked Summit and it costs $129.95 and ships immediately. I was too quick and didn't shop around.

Cancel your order and do a search on Ebay - You can get them from a vendor in NC- can't remember the name off the top of my head but it was 116 each plus 8 bucks to ship and they had them on my doorstep in 2 days
