i picked up the latest copy of corvette fever. It has an article on dying interiors. so.i got all of the trim out of my 88' today and im' starting to clean them.My question is ,do i buy custom dye from a automotive paint store or do i go with what ecklers has? I got looking and it looks like ecklers has everything nessesary and is specific to my needs. But will i get more profesional results buying in by the quart and using a paint gun. im' changing from sadle (yuck) to black
I just finished a complete color change from gray to black in an 85. I had real good results with (dont laugh) Kraylon from Wal-Mart. I used the Fusion for plastic paint for the first coat. Its a gloss black so I put a second coat of "regular" Krylon in a semi-gloss which matched the dash and new door panels very well. New carpet, new door panels, new seat belts,etc...Now its on to the car show.
I just did the same in my 88 vert, saddle to black. Used Plasticote dye found at local Motion Autoparts. New carpets, new leather seat covers, a lot of cleaning and fixing of plastic (gotta love Permatex plastic epoxy). Almost done with seats and a final cleaning and time to hit the road. If I can help you in any way, just ask.
Got it at Pepboys 5 bucks a twin tube, resin and hardener. Permatex 2 part plastic epoxy. It smells rank, use with ventilation. Great for reinforcing cracked/broken screw holes, cracks and fixing corners. Sands and paints well. Actually used it to build out the broken off ears and screw holes on the center dash surround that goes out around the left side of the breadbox. A little duct tape, cardboard, alum foil to make a flat stable, kinda non stick surface, mix and spread on the plastic epoxy , let dry and cure, remove cardboard and foil brace, shape with dremel, sand, drill screw holes and paint. Good as new. Stronger than the plastic actually. Tried fiberglass, doesn't seem to like to adhere to the abs plastic. The interior dye was Plasticolor not Plasticote (typo, sorry)
