OK. Who here shifts there automatics, manually. Me I usually drive in D, then bump the shifter up to OD. Ocasionallly I will find myself putting it in 1 and then bumping the selector up as I go. Wondering if anyone else does this? Is it harmful? I have a 94 LT1 M30.
I totally agree, I've go an A4 91 Coupe - nothing more than fun than starting out in 1 and bumping up through the gears - not every time, but certainly sometimes. I usually drive around town in Drive, and bump it up to OD on the highway.
You will get responses that say that is bad, that it put unnecessary wear on the transmission. Whatever, well, maybe I shouldn't use the brakes either because they might wear out, or open the doors because the hinges might wear out.
Yes, perhaps your transmission will wear out sonner, though I'd like someone to prove it, but come on, these cars were meant to be driven, so enjoy it, bump up through the gears if it makes you feel good. I know I do it.
I just take off in D, and kick to OD later. Then, when slowing down, it sounds real nice when I bump back down to D. I would bet anyone with an auto and aftermarket exhaust does this.

I never downshift it cause I am afraid of damaging it. 90% of the time I use D and then bump it up and 10% I manually shift gears. But I always let the trans downshift itself.
I have never read anything anywhere that suggests you should not downshift an automatic?
Now - cram it from OD into reverse or park at 50mph and THAT'LL damage it but good, but I have a hard time belieivng that simply downshifting at reasonable intervals (ie don't drop it into 1st at 50mph) does not do any harm.
