4+3 overdrive
got an 86. Never had or used the 4+3 before so how do you work it?
Heard they have problems so whether it doesnt work at all I dont know.
some instructions would be appreciated.
Thanks...

(i wont be as technical as some members, and maybe not completely accurate). Essentially you'll be using gears 1-3 (and occassionally 4) for city street driving. The OD enables after the car's been started and being driven when the engine temp reaches 119 degrees. See this thread regarding keeping the OD from enabling when you're driving.
Now personally (and this is where driver preference comes in), I only use the OD's 6th and 7th 'gears' when on the freeway or the occassional long stretch of 45 /50 mph road that occurs arround here; sometimes traffic will be slow enough to warrant using the 5th gear.
The OD disengages and 'drops down' to it's corresponding gear (7th>4th, 6th>3rd, 5th>2nd) when accellerating at a certain rate (someone else want to put up the specifics for this) and will re-engage at a certain point (example: on the freeway cruising at 65 in 7th, you step on it, the car drops out of OD, accellerates, you let off the gas, the car drops back into OD).
Accelerating onto the freeway, i usually get up to 4th gear and wait until i'm ~3k rpm before i enable the OD.
Decellerating (, and this is where driver preference comes in, as some board members will be screaming bloody murder at my mentioning this), i downshift through the gears in OD, usually going 7th > 6th > disabling OD into 3rd > 2nd > 1st, occassionally i will go 5th > 2nd if I've slowed down enough.
Popping out of OD manually will usually slow the car enough when travelling at freeway speeds or on a 45/50 street that it will negate your having to use the brakes to slow down.
Hope this has been some help, and I hope you enjoy driving your 4+3 '86, I know I enjoy driving mine!
