Default 86 digi dash problem

scince i got my vette the dash has been giving me problems. somtimes it is just dim so if the lighting in the car isnt right i cant see it or at night. it swithces back in forth and sometimes just dies competly. It seems to change when i go over a rough path which would indicate a loose conection to me, but i cant find it. any ideas?

Sure. There are about 6 million posts on the Forum about the infamous dash.

Heck, I think the last one was a week or so ago.

The Search function works.

I'll save you the search and type this info for the zillionth time. There are two circuit boards in the cluster and they plug together with a single row of pins on the forward board into a socket on the rear board (as the driver sees them). The pin nearest the center of the board carries the backlight lamp current and the lamp current through the age relaxed spring contact on the socket makes so much heat that it unsolders the pin on the forward board. The easiest fix is to solder a short insulated hookup wire from the pin to the socket and you will never have this problem again. Resoldering the pin won't fix the problem, you would have to replace the socket. The jumper fixes this problem forever.
Go here for pictures and instructions on removing your cluster so you can install the jumper: http://www.corvettefever.com/howto/24899/
