Starter Going Bad?

My starter sometimes does not start the car. It makes a strange noise and the car will not start. Not really clicking just a high pitched almost grinding noise. Any Ideas?

If it is making a grinding noise, it sounds like it isn't engaging the flywheel properly.

You have a defective starter solenoid.

You have a 89 so I think you have the older style starter that can be shimmed. You need to determine if the starter is too close or too far away from the flywheel... that is what I have found when the starter is grinding

If you need a starter, I have one that came out of an 85 that works perfectly. If you are interested, I'm sure other forum members can say if it will fit your 89. If it will fit and you are interested, send me an email. I'm selling it cheap.
