I'm in heaven!! I just got back from my first drive with the mufflers cut off. I haven't put on the muffler eliminators yet - the pipes are cut off about a foot in front of the muffler. Wow, what a difference!!! This is more like the way a vette should sound - It gives me chills down my spine. There's some resonance but it's not intolerable and I'm hoping it'll get a little mellower when the pipes are welded on and extend the exhaust to the rear bumper (but I don't want it to lose the raw edge).
i bet it sounds like crap from the outside of the car though, like mine does. i've had no mufflers or cats on my car for a year (pipes ends before the rear axle) and it sounds great and loud from the inside of the car, but it just sounds like another chevy missing a muffler from the outside.
i just recently purchased two 40 series flowmasters that i will put on soon...that should sound sweet
(and yes...immediately after removing the exhaust i was ecstatic too!)
I have been thinking about having the cats removed on my 95. I currently have a cat back flowmaster setup. Does anyone know if removal of the cats makes much of a difference on hp or sound? I would continue to run the flowmasters.
Funny timing on this thread. I just removed my stock mufflers, in preparation of installing a pair of Flowmaster Super 40s. I did a quick test fit of the Flowmasters to see how they looked, and gave the engine a quick turn. The exhaust sounds very deep, but also very loud. Granted, the sound is dumping right under the rear floor of the car as I do not have the tailpipes on. I suspect it will resonant a lot less once I have the pipes out the rear.

The thought crossed my mind so when I get the tailpipes installed and properly welded, I'll have a friend do some drive-bys so I can hear it from the outside. Ultimately, as long as it sounds good from the inside (and as long as I don't get any tickets), I'm not as concerned what it sounds like from the outside.
