Default overheating

hello again from germany..
please dont flame me on this question as I DID do a search regarding overheating and took notes..but I do have some unusual things happening here...
put some coolant in the overflow/reserve tank because I felt my coolant was low.
when at idle with the a/c off, the car heats up to 240 plus in a few minutes...
flip on the A/C and she goes down to 200 F
but take it out to the autobahn and drive 100mph for an hour and she holds at 190.
go into city traffic however, and she gets close to overheating.
flip on the AC again, she drops again

obviously, 2nd fan not kicking in right?

obviously the RPM/speed sensor is working..so Im guessing the temp sensor is out?
opinions...Im driving it to italy tomorrow for a corvette gathering..thanks..

Marc

Running the A/C forces the secondary fan to come on so it should be working if you see a temperature drop. The secondary fan should start running at around 228 degrees; have you visually checked both fans for operation?? It sounds to me like the primary fan is the one not working considering that the coolant temp climbs quickly at idle with the A/C off but does drop when you turn the A/C on.

At highway speed, the fans really don't anything to pull air thru the radiator, so if the temps do come down to the indicated 190, that's a sign that the cooling system is working.
