Default Locking Gas Cap - broken :(

I went to get gas tonight as my c4 was spluttering and running on fumes, but I couldn't open my gas cap

The key will turn as it should, but instead of opening, the cap just clicks.

I guess something inside has broken off.

Any ideas how to get the bugger off?

Wow, you're a bigger man than I.

I would have been too embarrased to admit I was turning it the wrong way, but it happens to us all.

I was going to suggest that you just light a match..... okay, I'm joking.

Glad you got it off.

Just FYI if it happens to you for real someday, pick a spot on the cap that won't hit the lip of the filler neck and drill a hole through the outside plastic and what's just under the plastic on the cap. Put a screw through that hole, or just leave the drill bit in it, and you can remove it. If it's a pressure cap...I think most things are anymore, you'll have to replace it after doing this.

I got tired of that clicking cap and having to carry my keys to the back of the car, and the extra time in the cold. It's snowing this weekend! I stopped at Walmart and got a cap that doesn't lock! I was getting tempted to leave the key stuck in the darn thing. I don't live in a high risk area for someone tampering with my gas cap. Also while at Walmart I got a radiator cap, the stock one had some rust on it.

I have had a number of these. They are pretty much a joke.

If you push down and twist enough they eventually come off without the key.
