Don't know about rebuild prices on 700R4s, but can I give you a piece of advice?

Use punctuation, please...I had a really hard time understanding that. I know, I know - this isn't grammar class, but jees man.

I also am a bit confused by your grammer. I'm currently having mine rebuilt with top of the line parts, shift kit, and 2800 stall converter. Total price about $1500. I'm sure you can find a cheaper price, but I didn't feel like skimping.

I had my '89 done a few years ago for about $1400, complete.
From what I was told, the originals are not heavy duty enough to last. The rebuild included several more internal clutches and a heavier duty torque converter with bigger turbine type blades.
Another thing I was told. Don't drive on hills in overdrive, ie, downshift away from OD.
Forgot to add, mine had just over 100K miles when the tranny biffed it.

I'm curious who did your rebuild, and how they managed to add "more internal clutches". Unless they used thinner steels or re-designed the unit - those clutch packs have fairly tight tolerances so putting more clutch plates in would be an interesting challenge. Regardless, a complete rebuild on a 700R4 including a rebuilt TC will run $800 to $1,800 depending on whether no hard parts need to be replace ($800) or lots of them do ($1,800+) so $1,200 is about average.

And driving on hills in overdrive should have absolutely no negative effects on a solid 700R4, unless of course you're haulin' a 5,000 lb load of BS behind the car. Don't believe old wives tales - go to a good, certified mechanic with lots of references and get the real story .

I had mine rebuilt this last winter, it was $1900 + converter. But - I had everything that could be replaced with something stronger, replaced with the strongest part made. The tranny is now one mean son of a beach.

OK, here it is in the Kings English:

How much on average for a good rebuild, or a price on replacing an OD on a 700r4? My '89 with 91k does not want to shift. Its not catching sometimes, then it does, and then it shifts. This happens below 50mph.
Although I plan on headers, there are currently no major mods: It has a slightly ported plenum and runners, a hypertech chip (mainly so the fans will turn on lower), a lower t-stat, throttle body bypass, open air lid filter, no frisbee. OK, you get the picture

I did my 700r4 2 years ago and i would highly recommend pro built with a 9.5" converter it cost around $2200 the converter was around $650 but it was well worth the investment

I just replaced the trans in my wife's 91 Formula. Got it from E Bay from a very kowledgeable guy in N.C. Cost was $825 and included:
2k stall converter
9 clutch packs vs 6 stock
2.5" wide kevlar lined band and drum machined to accept it.
"Corvette" servo
Full time lube mod
Fairbanks O/D servo
Beast sunshell
Modified 10 vane pump
1 year warranty
free shipping

On the other hand I had my 700R4 rebuilt 3 years ago using a B&M master rebuild kit, $385 for the kit and $550 for them to rebuild using it.

Hope this helps

As a price guideline: Im in Rockford, Illinois. Best tranny shop in town, by reputation, rebuilt my tranny for $1700, including a custom 2800 stall TQ. They tore it down, kevlar bands, top of the line everything, upgraded plantary gear, etc. to handle 600 HP and lots of torque. I had removed the tranny and brought it to them, so they did not have that work to do however.

If you pull it and put it back in yourself and bring it to a shop you will save a good portion of the cost. If you can find a shop that will do that. Some won't because they want to charge the labor to pull it.

I did my own. Put in a B&M Master kit with a shift kit. Parts ran about$300.00. rhneff there are spacers which come out and extra disks and steels added to the 3-4 clutch pack. Most folks think a 700R4 is black magic but it is quite simple when you get past the shock of a kazillion pieces and parts. The sevice guides and the instructions that came from B&M are actually straight forward. Haveone in the garage I am going to do this summer in case anyone needs it. Hope I got all the spelling and puncuation right!

Dand1892. First, a piece of advice from a old Dude. Take it to the shop of you're choosing and tell them what it's doing. DON'T tell then that you want it re-built. Ask them if they can fix it. If you tell them that you want it re-built, sure they'll re-build it, and you'll pay for a re-build. If it just needs to be repaired, it might cost a lot less. Of course, if you want it re-built and "beefed-up" that's a different story.

I had a performance rebuild done by Grant Transmission (phone # on my site) in CT a few years ago. The rebuild cost $850, the shift kit about $250 and the 2,000rpm GN TC another $225 for a total of around $1,300.

Wayne88, I'm just across the border in Rockland Co, NY. If you would like to have Grant do your A4 I'm willing to follow you up and bring you home. It took him a little over a day to do mine, so you would likely have to leave it overnight.

Give Grant a call and discuss your A4 issues; if you need a ride back, send me an e-mai or IM.
