Default Rear Monoleaf Replacement Question

I have an 86 C4 coupe. I found out Saturday that my right inner U-joint needs to be replaced. While I was under the rear of the car I noticed that much of the black protective coating on the rear monoleaf spring was gone. Should I be concerned about it? I didn't see any delamination but I'm still wondering if it would be wise to go ahead and replace it with a new one from VB&P or someone else. Part of my concern is that I'm running 315/35ZR17's on the rear and I'm afraid if the spring let go that they would contact the rear quarter doing some very expensive damage. Thanks in advance for any input or advice.

I could be wrong but I think the shock will prevent the wheel from collapsing too much. Assuming the shock survives.

Regardless, if you're under there and have the means to replace the rear spring, it can't be a bad idea. That spring has seen it's share of miles and won't last forever.

Thanks for the input. The car has about 140K on it and that's kind of what I was thinking as well. I figure a new sport spring for the rear is only $300 and it will probably dramatically improve the car's handling as well.
