Default cat removal

Is there a big power gain in removing the front 2 catalytic converters? I'm thinking of doing away with them and was wondering if it would be noticable powerwise.

What year car? what motor? Any other mods? If it is an L98 car, removing the 2 precats is beneficial, but removing the main cat, or cats on the LTx motors is a waste of time. They can flow well enough to have over 400hp run thru them without any hinderance. All you are going to do by removing your cats is add pollution to our ozone and make your car louder

I cannot agree more with what kwik_ta just said.

I don't really care if you have no emissions tests, its all about doing the right thing... and leaving cats on is doing the right thing. It's that simple.

As for loss of power? Expect the LTx cats to cost no more then 5hp. Wow. A lot...

He has an '87.

Tom, I recommend getting headers, that kind of solves the precat problem.

Tommy's friend has a Random Tech cat on his '89 with LT headers and has no problems.

I replaced the pre-cats with a new larger "Y" pipe without the cats. I still have the OEM CAT in the middle. It is a little louder (not very much) and it's probably just my imagination (or wishful thinking) but it seems to have a little more get-up-n-go from a standing start.

Ok, just remove the front Y-pipe and manifolds and add headers.

The front cats are useless after the engine is hot, if the main cat is in good condition.
