I know this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find any info when I did a "search". How do you legally ship R12? I know it has to go "ground", but I'm not sure how the box should be labeled. A relative in Arizona was cleaning out her garage and found a couple of 12 0z. cans that are in good condition. I can have them for free, but we're not sure on how to properly ship them.

i think you will for sure have to ship it ground, via ups or fed x or similar. you can possess r-12 but, it can no longer be manufactured or imported and once the stores are all out of the "fresh" stuff or the reclaimed-refined stuff, that is it.
As far as I know, UPS Ground - either call or just go to their web. You could ship Fed Ex air, but the last time I looked, their hazardous material handling fee was $90/lb with a $150 minimum. For that price, you would do better to get your license (25 Bucks at www.epatest.com) and then visit your local Autozone where R12 runs about $15/can.
If it were me, I'd wrap the cans in bubble wrap and ensure that they cannot shift during transportation. You might even want to put the box inside a box. Then simply ship them UPS ground.
Is it legal to sell the stuff? I have about 70 cans at home, and I've only got one car left that uses it. It would sure be nice if I could get $20-25 for a few cans.
It's on ebay all the time. I'm sure the R134 comes to the stores on UPS ground. There are far more hazardous chemicals that come into a hardware store every day than R12. The Corvette is the only thing that I have old enough for R12, I have some cans hanging around, and am starting to hoard R134, I have heard that soon it will meet the same fate as the R12.

Where are you located? I think I'll take the online EPA course. I need to recharge my vette.
You can't ship it unless you have the proper paperwork.
It's something like a $250,000 fine for shipping hazardous materials without proper paperwork.
For UPS, you will need to be an authorized shipper, in other words, you simply can not legally ship it.
In my building, there are only three authorized shippers out of over 1,000.
best answer you can get - Mojo, don't you work for UPS?
but is R-12 really a hazzardous material? i realize it's ozone depleting, but hazzardous, i'm not sure. i took hazzardous materials to be gas, acid, bleach, etc.
i shipped my R134-A UPS ground - and it was labeled as refrigerant - which is exactly what it is.
someone mentioned FEDEX air - i don't think you can ship pressurized cans fia air freight - think of what would happen to that at 30,000 feet (just my ovservation/opinion)

Where are you located? I have an EPA 609 certification card and can legally buy R12 in any size container.
