Just got the AC going in my 84. When I bought it the compressor wouldn't come on. Thought it was the compressor itself but after some troubleshooting it turned out that the pressure cycling switch was bad/intermittant. The compressor would come on when you "tweaked" the terminals a bit. Thought is was the wiring but ended up being the switch itself. Replaced the switch and then it seemed to work and blew semi cold. Added an additional can of freon (previously converted to R134a) and now it seems to blow pretty cold.
My question is how rapidly should the compressor cycle? As it is most of the time it seems to stay on for only a few seconds, then off for a few. However sometimes it stays on for maybe 10 seconds and then off for a few. Is this rather quick cycling time period normal?
GM specs are 8 cycles or less per minute above 50 degrees. Switch should be set at 22.5 psi for R134 and most new switches are preset to that #. You need to obtain high and low side pressures to determine if the charge is right - could be too low - could be that the orifice is plugged up - especially if you didn't clean it out before recharging. If you can get the pressures, note the outside air temp and repost.
