I got a call yesterday from a buddy in Virginia that owns a 93 coupe with around 50k miles. He told me that while at a shop to get his A/C recharged, he asked the mechanic to take a look over everything else in the engine compartment. The mechanic told him he had a leaking oil pan gasket, front and back of the intake was leaking, and for good measure, noted a leak at the bottom of the timing cover. When my friend asked how much it would cost to change them, he was given a verbal quote of......$2000. I never let anyone else touch my vehicles, so I don't know if this is the going rate for a job like this, but it sure sounds like a screw-job to me. Could anyone offer me some insight here?
I forgot to mention in my original post, my buddy acknowledged that his coupe does NOT leak like a sieve, but it does leave a few odd drops on the garage floor.

That's a little pricey. Sounds more like a quote from a dealership. The oil pan and intake gaskets are real easy on LT1s. The front cover, even assuming it needs to come off (I'd guess more likely it's the seals in it) is a bit more time consumming but not THAT bad. Tell him to bring it to me, I'll do it for well less than half of that!
i would have too agree. that is way too pricey for the work and materials. it seems like all lt1's leak alittle mainly intake front and rear. my crankshaft seal leaked alittle and that leak made it appered to be the oil pan. no biggy! i fixed it when i did my opti and wp. there are several cf members that would probably jump in and do it for way way less. i would tell buddy to do it himself or you two can attack and knock it out and have it done right.
i do my own vette, no matter what it is. it's not so much to save money but more so to do it right.
Amazing how once someone see's the word Corvette, all of a sudden the price jumps by 100% or more. It's a fricken small block chevy. Millions of them out there.

That being said though, if he's not real familiar with the LT1s, don't let him touch it anyway. Not hard but definitely different in some respects.
This is exactly why I do all the work myself. Although some folks do not have the time or the tools to do it themselves. There is just too many crook bastards out there taking advantage of people they see have no idea about cars. I've had a few try to rip me off in the past.
really! whats with shops when we pull up in a vette? cha-ching. why do they think we are loaded with money. i don't get. is it because our vettes are so shinny?
