Default 88 Vette Octane?

Good Afternoon Everyone! I hope you all are enjoying the weekend!! I was just wondering what Octane level everyone here uses...For the past 5 years I have been putting nothing in except Sunoco ULTRA 94....am I just wasting my money? Or is this gas better for my car....

Thank you

Nick

My opinion is to run the lowest octane that makes the car happy. If you do not have knock sensor detecting ping, the octane should be fine. If I recall, your owners manual recommends 89 octane. With todays gas prices, I do not believe in wasting money. Others may disagree.

You should/could use the lowest that your car will like. If you get detonation (pinging), your octane is too low. I won't go any lower than 93, only because my compression is 11:1.

Hey Nick, Hope your weekend goes well, too! I use 92 (and above if
I can find it)...... My owners manual states to always use "premium" fuel in this particular engine..... But as above stated, run the lowest that will not pre-detonate......PS, welcome to the forum! Lee

i am still in experiment stage. the tank i am on now is premium. after my road trip today it shows to get better mpg then the light stuff. i won't know until this tankfull is out. if it is the same then i'll run the light stuff. no ping either way

Chevrolet reccomends a minimum of only 87 Octane for L98's (look in your owners manual) As long as the engine is running good thats all you need. I've had plenty of L98 cars, and they all ran perfectly on 87. It went up to 91 minimum (with a caveat that you can go down to 87 if you must) in 92 with the intro of the LT1. Don't know about 90-95 LT5 though, probably 91. Heres a little petty cheap trick I do, I don't save that much, but better to have the dollar in my pocket than the oil shieks. I fill up with premium, I run the car to half a tank, I fill up again with 89, which will average about 91, When that runs dry I repeat process. P.S. my cheap wife actually put 87 in my 95 ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Check the C5 and C6 general forums, they have some great threads right now on gasoline and oil. Very much worth reading. My 02cents is use the cheapest premium you can find or whatever works in your car without knocking and Mobil 1 oil. Run the oil 7500 miles or more and change the filter 3-5K depending on driving conditions.

Oh man if I'm going through the trouble jacking up my car and crawling under it, the oil's coming out too.

Default Gas Spoils !

Gas is a product that spoils like produce.

I always spend the extra dough to put the highest octane in my baby. I use Shell or Chevron.

The owner of the Chevron I go to also has a shop and works on all of my cars (4). He swears Chevron gas will keep you injectors cleaner.

My 18 year old drove the car filled it up will garbage gas and the exhaust stunk.

I wish I could get Sunoco gas !!!

I'm using 95 octane and sometimes 98 octane.. I'm not sure if octane rate is calculated different way here in Europe
