Default New Shocks

My current Bilstein shocks are shot.

Next month I am planning to install 4 brand new shocks. The car has the standard suspension, and I was considering ordering the Z51 shocks. I want a bit more performance out of the car. The car seems to float alot at present, due to the shocks being shot. I have no referance to what it should actually handle like. I did alot of reading on the forum and found that the 96 has the softest suspension out there, interesting to start there. Anyway, I dont feel like ordering some expensive package including new springs bars shocks etc. The car appears to sit at the correct stock ride height, so I think the springs are still good.

If I put the Z51 shocks on the standard suspension car, will there be any adverse affects or issues that come up? Has anyone done this? I am sure someone has to have done this same job before.

When I go to order shocks, what else will I need? Do I need to order bushings etc? Also, where is the best place to order new shocks? I want Bilstein Shocks, unless there is something better.

Thanks

I thought I read somewhere that the soft spring with firm shock combo was a good set up.
I don't know about specifics.

It is.

I put KONI Sports on my Soft Ride (FE1?) and am quite pleased with the results; nice enough ride and excellent control.

Bilsteins are good shocks for the money, but I think there is a real advantage in having an adjustable unit like the QA-1 or the KONI.

A good source is shox.com

Is there any shocks I can adjust without taking them off the car? I just dont like doing the work more than once if not necessary. It would be cool to set the firmness stiffer or softer when I want though. I have the FE45 on my 98 and cant tell a dam bit of difference between the settings though.

I put the Z51 valving Bilsteins on my '96 when I had it. It also has the base suspension. I didn't notice much difference driving straight on...but man, when getting on or off the interstate...the car was flat!!! No role at all.
I liked that combination of the softer springs with stiffer shocks. It's a nice compromise between the two set ups!
Look up Van Steele....he has the BEST prices on Bilsteins.
