I've been looking around for replacement door sills for my 86 and noticed that Ecklers sell what appear to be door sills made out of carpet for 88 and up. Can I use these in my car?
Yeah, what's wrong with them? I recently reworked the sills on my 87. I fixed a crack with PVC cleaner and cement, removed the pads and dyed the sills, then put on new pads (the driver's side pad was crushed and cracked). The new pads were not in any catalog, but it was either MAM or CA that had them when I asked. (Forgive me for not remembering which vendor, the pads have been in my toolbox for a couple of years, waiting for me.) I finished off the job with a pair of clear sill covers, and they look just fine.
I dyed mine to change them from red to black and that worked fine. The problem is that they are in a high wear area and they are constantly chipping so the red shows through. I'm tired of touching them up, so I want to get black replacements. Also, the carpet looks like it would hold up better to daily wear and tear and wouldn't crack like the plastic.
If the aftermarket vendors don't have the parts, Chevy might. I bought a couple of halo panels from the General that weren't available anywhere else. Have you looked at black sill protectors?
The original sills were painted. They were moulded in a grey plastic and then shot with whatever paint is appropriate. Dupont makes color correct interior paint for plastic. With proper prep, you can restore them to look as good as new. This is what I did 2 years ago and they still look good.
