Default Need Help Universal Joint?

Hi, I have a 1984 Corvette and my mechanic says I need new universal joints put in the rear, however he doesn't do it and I would like to save some money anyway. Can anyone tell me how to replace the universal joint and what tools I may need. Also where I can get the joints for cheap? Thanks alot.

Your mechanic doesn't want to do it!

It's not so bad. Scorp has a great write up in the Tech Tip section. Follow those instructions and you'll do fine.

Also my mechanic said it was the right side u joint if that helps at all??? I'm guessing there is one on each side of the differential. Should I replace both or just the side I had problems with? I am good with fixing cars and stuff once I figure out what everything is. Thanks.

There are 4 back there, one inboard and one outboard on each half shaft.

2 on the drive shaft. Time to get a factory service manual if you want to wrench on your car.

Don't go for cheap "U" joints. Spend the money and buy Spicer. You will be much happier and you won't be changing them as soon as you will the cheap ones. Need the practice...then buy cheap.

Get a Helms manual or at least a Haynes manual. You can usually get a Haynes at most automotive parts stores. This will give you the information you need on how to replace these. It will also help in the future.
