Buy the darn Helm manuals. I see post after post that if you had the service manual your problems would be solved. Especially the wiring and electronic issues.
I don't think you should be discouraging people from asking questions on the Forum. After all, that's what it's for. Sometimes it's easier to get an answer here than it is to consult a book or manual. People here tend to speak in English, whereas most manuals are written in Greek, especially when it comes to electrical issues.
I have no problem buying the manual - but I like to hear from others with the same problems - or who have done the procedure - they tell me the same facts in a "different language" so this helps me understand alot better. A books great - but experience is golden!
You don't want to read posts about wireing or electronic isssues -- Don't!!!
Is anybody forcing you to read them all?

I have several manuals that I use all the time. But, it's always nice to hear from someone with the same problem or has made a certain repair before because they can tell about situations that may arise that you won't read about in any manual. Tho alot of people here are more knowledgeable than I, I'm glad to share my limited knowledge with anyone that asks.
I'm just saying, make your life easier and buy the service manual. I've read mine cover to cover and occasionally do it again.
Even if you don't absorb everything and just skim through it you'll remember you've seen some sort of procedure or diagram in it. Then you can look for it again.

The Manual is needed but some folks have just bought the car while others want to see if there is a fix for a possible common problem. Why go through all the time and headaches of a formal diagnosis if someone else has done it already and can steer you in the right direction and spare you the pain
Just my .02
We were all there once, this is the reason I spend the time to design all those Tech Tips for people.

I also agree with you. So please don't think I was ganging up on you earlier. Some stuff should be refered to the manual but some stuff is not in the manual either so I think the questions posted on this forum should be answered in an effort to help. If someone needs something that is specifically listed in a manual then they should buy a manual. I know when I need torgue specs I don't post here looking for them I go and get the manual for them
Most of us have the manual. Some of us are not mechanics by day and need a little consensus when it comes to deciphering some of that Helms stuff. And... even the mighty Helms doesn't tell the whole story! That's why I'm glad that there is a Corvette forum.
Sometimes we ask the "stupid" or "duh" questions just to check ourselves. I'd rather ask before I start rather than after I broke! And... I'm gonna do my best to help others in the same boat.
Honestly, if you don't have anything to contrinute to a post, please just don't contribute. If a post bothers you, don't look at it!!!
I think some of you guys are missing the point. When someone asks a question about his 87 LT1 he needs to do a little reading. No one is against asking questions just not totally stupid ones with out at least trying to find answer by using the search function. I have noticed a lot of new guys here and that is great but if you want to wrench on your car it is best to get a manual. Lastly not all the advice here is correct I have given some miss informed answers myself and if people want to play then they need to get the right equiptment.

The search function? Yeah, there's a wonderful piece of technology!
Let's see if I can explain better the intent of my post. I love questions, seeing them, answering them if I can, or just reading other's problems so I know if I see it again I can offer some help.
Things would be easier to explain sometimes if you could tell the person to look in his service manual for this or that diagram and explain what's going on.
If someone can buy a Vette they certainly can buy the service manual to aid their woes along with advice from here.
i see your point. i have a vette and i have the books (sm libary), i have the tools and now i am getting high dollar scanner. i like to read whether here or my books. i find it entertaining to read and try to answer questions. i have recently replaced my opti and wp and all the seals. first i read my books, then i did a google search on it, then i came here and went thru a couple of hundred post. i learned something from each area, learned a few tricks and a few short cuts and a several different methods of tackling this project. all info gathered has help and gave me a perfectly cleared picture of what my project was going to be like. reading my books gave me first knowledge and the rest was alittle icing on the cake.
thanks to my books, cf and google because i never rely just on one source of information.
allt4...your first post came off alittle harsh and probably made everyone feeling foolish to the "dumb" questions asked. but you finally made yourself clear to your meaning. reading between the lines your advice is solid.
i don't mind dumb questions because i have a bunch of them myself but am alittle shy to ask because of what everyone will think. not only that the dumb and silly questions make for very interesting reading and i find it relaxing to my other words stressful life.
Speaking of manuals and only slightly off topic I saw a CD for sale on Ebay that supposedly showed all of the part numberd for C4s thru C5s. Anyone have any input on that? Do the Helm's amnuals list P/Ns?

I have it it is useful but a little hard to read on some pages.

Your doing it right like I try to do.It is easy to help those that help themselves.
BTW, the search function works great for me. I never use the basic search and just automatically skip down to advanced when I click search. Then I pick a forum that might give me the best results and go from there.
