My a/c decided to stop working yest, the hottest day so far in NY...anyway, after changing my alternator because this seemed to have died at about the same time I noticed that the a/c compressor was not turning on, in an attempt to recharge the system I could not because the compressor was not working...There are a bunch of switches attached to and leading to the system...does anyone have experience with the compressor??? I would hate to go to a shop and have them tell me that I need a compressor if it is something that I could fix for alot less...Thanks

If the low pressure switch has the compressor locked out due to low charge, you may have to jumper it.
low freon will shut the system down to prevent compressor damage, well at least that is the threory. if the system is low on freon you will need a shop to do a dye test. some will tell you just add some more freon, but i say why waste the money and effort. have the system checked for leaks and have the leaks fixed, they will also do a vacumm on the system to "boil" any wator vapor and recharge the system. this will give you many years of service. i like to do things right. do it once and save a bundle. on the other hand as george mentioned..check the fuse
