Default Carpet question

I'm redoing the carpet in my -87 coupe. Wow! Is this old stuff glued on or what!??! I'm struggling to pull the old carpet off the plastic along the trans tunnel.

Is there any easier way to get the old glue off other than sitting here for hours on end tryingt to pull it off in chunks? This stuff should win some sort of award for it's adhesive and stretch properties!

Can I just pull this off, use the 3M spray adhesive on the carpet and plastic panel and then just stick it on and tuck the edges up under the black trim that covers the top of the trans tunnel... or do I need to remove the black trim to do this properly? I'd like avoid removing the console trim plate if possible. Anyone else try this?

Also, the plastic trim on the side of the center storage tray has a screw down low by the seat belt mount bolt that just won't come out for anything. I'd like to pop that off to make the carpet replacement on the riser panel behind the seat go easier. Is there some trick here or am I looking at having to drill this turkey out?

Thanks!

Brad

This is the way my '85 looked a couple of weeks ago. I still have the door panels to do and a few trim items to put back in. I took the console top loose, you may not need to. As you can see, I took the side panels all the way out. Try using a hair dryer to help soften the glue. I used a heat gun.
